Reader Doing Odd Things

bythebriny, cool, I think you’ve got it right.

It seems weird that people can read the posts without visiting the blog. It’s the opposite of what I’d want to see happening. Not fond of the font either cause it’s a bit weak. Oh well.

It’s pretty common actually. People have been using feed readers for a very long time. It’s just one way to view a blog. People can decided to use the Reader if they like it or they can look at sites directly. The Reader brings traffic and connects people though. It is a good way to keep track of the latest posts on a group of blogs. And it’s designed to focus on content for people who want that but a way to connect them to the blog directly if they want that too.

Yes. It remains the case that I preferred it as it was and do not like having these changes suddenly imposed. I expect they were necessary but this doesn’t alter anything. WP have changed the way blog posts are presented and this is a big deal.

But onwards and upwards. Just having a moan.

I do NOT like the new changes! It is very difficult to read the text. The font is not dark enough and seems to melt into the background. I find I have to read VERY slowly to be sure I’m not skipping over the hard to read font. Irritating and unnecessary. Screwing around just to give someone at WP something to do. Change the darkness of the font BACK to what it was, please.

I can no longer get the Reader on my work computer it tells me to use the classic WordPress dashboard. Then it tells me I have to update my browser. As this is a work computer I can not do this. This is a pain I’m a shift worker and I do have alot of down time where I’m not needed so I usally catch up on my reading on wordpress but now that is no longer an option. Looks like WordPress is a site I will be no longer using.

I want to add my voice to dislike the new reader – mainly because I can’t read anything!

I have wanted to read several posts since the introduction of the new format, but when I finally get to the page it will not scroll up or down nd let me read content.

I have had to google individual blogs in order to read thier content, how the f**k is this an improvement?

Even getting so far as finding where to click is confusing, the system is not user friendly at all

@joydees1, you do need to have at least Internet Explorer 10 if you are using Internet Explorer. If you don’t have that, and if you do have a mobile phone, you might try using the Reader on your phone.

@opusanglicanum, the part you mentioned about not being able to scroll is a bug. Thanks for reporting it. I will see about getting it fixed.

retiredlawnman – Yep. I also find the text indistinct. Such a basic mistake.

Hang on. It seems that it is now impossible to get from the post appearing in the reader to the blog on which it is posted. Is this right? I’ve tried clicking all the buttons and nothing works.

If so I am completely annoyed about this change. I can’t really complain when it’s free but boy am I fed up with ‘upgrades’ that are actually downgrades. It’s a problem that seems to afflict software developers everywhere.

I just started to like WP about 20% less than previously. Let’s hope there are no more compulsory improvements in the pipeline.

The “Visit Site” link in the “…” or “more” menu should do the trick. Did you try the “Visit Site” link?

  • Unknown's avatar

The odd post has a ‘visit site’ button but most do not. I wonder how I ensure that my posts do have a ‘visit site’ button. Does anyone know?

I usually hope that readers of posts will be tempted to explore the blog a bit further, but now each post appears as an isolated text in a feeble font with no variation EVER in the font or style or look of the page and disconnected from the blog.

I usually have a ‘sticky’ at the top of my blog explaining the context for my posts. This is now utterly useless.

All In all I am amazed that such a compulsory change can be made. It frightens me as to what might still be in the pipeline. I strongly object this change and would opt out of it if it were possible.

@guymax, a visit link has been added to the bottom of posts in the main Reader page today and it links directly to the original post, but I think you were talking about summary feeds before. You may change to using a summary feed by going to WP Admin > Settings > Reading and choosing the “Summary” option instead of “Full text” for feeds.

Thanks. That sounds like it will help.
