Reader follower count conflict with option choice in Follow Blog widget

In the Follow Blog widget there is an option to display the number of followers. I have it turned off, and it works as expected in the sidebar. However, Reader displays the number of followers in the blog view header (https://wordpress.com/read/blog/id/66644914/). Reader should not display it for bloggers who opted out in the widget. It can be important.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Thanks for that suggestion! The Reader currently isn’t linked to that widget setting, but I’ve passed your suggestion on to our team so they can consider adding that as a future feature. :)

Thanks, Rachel. Yeah, I figured it wasn’t connected to the widget, but it could be an option somewhere in Settings, maybe along with the choice of summary or full display of feeds.

I’ve noticed the same situation in the Gravatar profile. The “Followers” widget there (from widget.wp.com) shows a count. The blog owner has no control over it except to hide the profile.

This has potential for even more deleterious impact than the Reader follower count.

Site and Gravatar owners should have full control over the social networking features/components of the service.

You can remove that follow button from your Gravatar profile by removing that site from your profile’s Verified Services: https://en.gravatar.com/profiles/edit/#verified-services

If you’d like a link to that site without the follow button, you can add it to your profile’s Websites section instead: https://en.gravatar.com/profiles/edit/#your-links

I’ve also mentioned this to our team to see if an option can be added there to remove the follower count from verified services in Gravatar, as well.

Thanks again Rachel for your information and for passing on the suggestion.

I had tried to remove the Verified Service, but did not find a way to delete it. On your suggestion I went back and found it “hiding” in a very pale gray bar with a pale gray X placed oddly at the far right in the gray bar when hovering over the URL … if, in this instance, one thinks to try hovering to discover options (a regrettable new design standard for discovering options).

In my doddering opinion the X-to-delete hover prompt should be conspicuous, adjacent to the thing to be deleted, preferably left of it where feasible. Color shift on actionable hover everywhere — text, button and menu — should be distinctively conspicuous.
