Reader having trouble subscribing
-
Hello, one of the readers of my blog has changed email addresses, and is experiencing errors when trying to create a new subscription with that address. I’m using Jetpack Subscriptions. She says ‘Every time I try to get a new password they tell me that the password link is invalid (after I’ve clicked on the link in the email they’ve sent).’
-
Hello, I’m the original poster. I wanted to edit my post and subject line but didn’t see a way to do that.
I think I misattributed this error to Jetpack Subscriptions. I now think this person was trying to generate a new password for a website account.

@mbrailer it sounds like she’s trying to regain access to her WordPress.com account. Is she able to reach out here? Or, if she can’t log in, can you send the email address? If you’ll type it here it will be hidden from public view so only staff can see it. We’ll use that to see if we can tell what’s wrong.

After further investigation, I think my reader may be having trouble with both her website login *and* her subscription. I think I can help with the login issue on my own.
The address she wanted to subscribe with is (email visible only to moderators and staff). Thank you.

That particular email address does not have a WordPress.com account, but that’s also not required for subscribing via email.
What is the URL of the site they’re trying to subscribe to?

I see a pending subscription for comments on a specific post on that site, https://cutetropolis.com/2019/05/25/weekend-open-thread-82/, for that email, but no subscription for the site itself. That comments subscription has been pending for over a year.
And as staff-blorbo said above, there’s no WordPress.com account for that email. We also haven’t sent any password reset emails for that email address.
Just to make sure we’re speaking of the same thing, is the problem when they type their email into the widget on your site sidebar saying “Subscribe By Email”, or something else?
If someone enters their email on that form, all that should happen is that they get an email with a link to confirm the subscription. Nowhere should they be required to enter a password, and from what I can see the owner of that email address hasn’t recently submitted that form for your site.

@kokkieh, that’s correct — my reader used the Subscribe by Email box or some equivalent. I also sent a subscription invite to that email, which hasn’t been used yet.
I think I need to work with the user personally to resolve this, because it looks like WordPress’ systems are working fine. Thanks for the information.

Thanks for confirming. I don’t see any subscription invitation emails for that address in our logs either.
Last thing we can try: open your site in a private browser session, and enter that email address into the subscription widget yourself.
Let me know here once you’ve done that, and I can check whether any emails sent from our end.

I entered my reader’s email address into the Subscription widget earlier today and saw a message directing me to subscribe.wordpress.com. I shared that address with my reader.
Just now, I tried that again, and saw a “Success” message instead, so I think my reader may be working on the problem at her end.
Thank you!

Hi there,
It looks like they verified the subscription as they are now showing up in your followers’ list. You can see that too here:
