READER: Images are different sizes

When you look at our blog in Reader at https://wordpress.com/read/blog/id/27979275/ and scroll downwards, you will see that two posts display large photographs as a part of the preview, the rest of the them do not.

I have experimented with 1)the size of the image inserted into the post and 2) the size of the “featured image,” thinking it would be used in reader. Neither appears to correspond to the size of the image in Reader.

We would them all to display at the larger size in reader.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

As a follow up, I checked out the blog on the Reader in my WordPress app for Android. Some of the images come up and others don’t at all. Please explain.

When I look at the blog on my Chrome app for Android, both the post image and the featured image shows up in the stream. Please explain.

    Phew, that’s alot!

    Hi Jeffrey,

So the first thing I did was reprocess your sites Feed into the Reader to make sure we’re looking at the most up-to-date information from your site. Looks like now the four most recent posts are all showing the correct, large image.

Your theme, On a Whim, doesn’t support featured images, so your site attempts to set the featured image meta data using any images within your post. With that in mind, it seemed easier to explain this visually so I made a small video explaining how the Reader is sometimes using small images and sometimes using large images:

The end result being that I believe your experiments with increasing the size of your images were successful, but it does take time for the Reader to re-process those posts so you may not have seen the effect immediately.

As a follow up, I checked out the blog on the Reader in my WordPress app for Android. Some of the images come up and others don’t at all. Please explain.

This is a bit less predictable, but the fix is actually the same thing. For the image to show up in the mobile apps version of the reader, the post needs to have tell the reader what the “feature media” is. When your theme has the Featured Images capability, so long as the featured image is set, that bit is handled.

But since your theme does not have Featured Images, you’ll need to ensure your posts body has a large enough image that the “featured media” property gets set in the Reader. 1000px wide is the size I’d recommend.

When I look at the blog on my Chrome app for Android, both the post image and the featured image shows up in the stream. Please explain.

What’s happening here is that you have the WordPress.com mobile theme enabled. So viewing your site in a mobile browser like Chrome, disregards your theme (On a Whim) and instead displays it in that theme. It just so happens that the mobile theme displays the featured image in addition to the post.

Since your posts are actually pulling the featured image from your post body — you get duplicate images.

The nice thing about this issue is that your theme, On a Whim , is actually responsive and mobile-ready. So if you’ll go to your blog’s mobile settings:

    https://wingedbeautydotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=mobile-options

And switch the “Enable mobile theme” option to ‘No’ and save changes, you won’t have this problem and your mobile site will match your desktop site much better. :)

Carolyn,Maybe this will help get all of the images to be as large as those of other bloggers.
    Thanks,
    Jeff
