Reader Lists – Cannot ADD new URLs to Reader list
-
Building a new Reader List. Many sites over 100 sites fail to add. Error is “Unable to add feed to list.” Have a list of the sites.
-
Hi there!
Can you share a few of the links that you’re trying to add to your Reader List? We can check on our end to see if there are any issues with adding those links to a list.
Thanks!

Here is a handful. If you need more I can post here or on google docs.

Hi there, it looks like something happened to the formatting for your links, but for any site with “wordpress.com” in the URL, you don’t need to add it to the Reader manually. Instead you can just visit the site directly, then look for this option at the bottom right corner:

Clicking that option will subscribe you to the site and you will see posts from that site in your Reader.
For the other sites in your list, it looks like you may be adding some kind of “feed URL” but it’s hard to tell due to the formatting issue. But you should just be able to type in the site address (to the homepage) directly and we will connect automatically. You should see the option to follow the site, as shown in this screenshot

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

I know well the ‘following’ facility. And instead wrote about the Reader List. Consider for just a moment that perhaps I do not wish to clean my In Box of hundreds of items each day. Humor me. The hay stack of email just might get in the way of more important items. Thank you very little.

Hi again,
The hay stack of email just might get in the way of more important items.
Thanks for clarifying, I’m not sure we were aware of that concern. For your existing sites, you can edit the settings (of each) from here if you find you are getting email from any of them currently: https://wordpress.com/following/manage
For new sites you add, you can set the default behavior here to be Default email delivery: None here: https://wordpress.com/me/notifications/subscriptions
This will ensure that you do not have emails from any new sites you add, and instead the updates will be in the reader only.
-
If I cannot add over 100 sites to my reader list modifying the subscription settings in ‘following’ does not solve anything. I still cannot add the sites to my reader list.

Hi there,
To add any site to a Reader list, you have to either search for it or paste its URL. The URLs you shared are not formatted correctly, and that’s why you’re getting that error.
For example, if I try to add the following URL, it won’t work.
http://ellenolinger.wordpress.com” xmlUrl=”http://ellenolinger.wordpress.com/feed/”/>The correct URL, in that case, is
http://ellenolinger.wordpress.comor
http://ellenolinger.wordpress.com/feed/Hope that helps you understand the issue and fee free to let me know if you need more help.

The list I have provided is an export from a previous reader list. It is not cleaned up entirely. However I am simply copying the link and pasting it into the new reader list. I am including a screen shot of the error. I have added some 97 sites to this new list. And have over 100 sites that get the error “Unable to add feed to list”. Here is a screen shot of the failure just now. The old reader list is being replaced because it has several deleted by owner sites and an “unknown error” that cannot be removed from the reader list.

new reader list – that will not add http://ellenolinger.wordpress.com/

Hi there!
Thanks for that screenshot.
It looks like you are trying to add that site to your list at https://wordpress.com/read/list/hricjd/my-aaa-list/edit/items
ellenolinger.com is the primary site address on http://ellenolinger.wordpress.com/
Can you try adding ellenolinger.com to your list instead and let me know if that works?
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Mishivee,
I tried ellenolinger.wordpress.com and it worked. However when I tried earthianhivemind.net I got the same failure message.
Trying a few more with the results
riddlefromthemiddle.wordpress.com failed
quiall.wordpress.com failed
avian101.wordpress.com failed
I dropped the http:// prefix on all of these. The ellenolinger.wordpress.com was the only one that worked. I don’t know if it is some sort of timing issue or perhaps a physical location of the target record that is causing this issue. Peculiar. As I mentioned above I was able to copy link then paste link for some 97 other URLs in my new list. So it does work under some circumstances. I still have approximately 100 URLs that are failing. Part of that list is above. Let me know if you need more information.
Thanks !

The list I have provided is an export from a previous reader list.
To clarify, you have a .opml formatted export file from a previous Reader instance?
It’s possible to import from that kind of export file, do you have any success if you try the steps here? https://wordpress.com/support/reader/#import-export-blog-subscriptions

To make sure I understand, you mean to say you are trying to manually add sites like this
earthianhivemind.netyes?I tried that and for me I had no error message. For you this results in an error, yes? Here’s what I saw when I tried:
