Reader Notification of New Comments
-
I have seen blogs where as a reader one can select to be notified via email of new comments. How can I incorporate this option into my wordpress blog?

That option is not available here on wordpress.com although I wish it was. I sometimes forget to check back on an interesting discussion I was in on a blog.

Althought the option you refer to is not available here, you can use the feedburner “update by email” function for rss feed updates for both posts and comments as I have done on my blog http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/11/how-can-i-offer-email-updates/

Thanks for your responses.
TimeThief: I will check out your link.
Sacredpath: Do you think this would be an option that the wordpress team would be willing to add in the future?

TimeThief: I went to the feedburner site and registered my blog and had the code generated. I copied the code into a text widget window. However when I selected “save changes” and then viewed my blog, I found that not only was this new text widget not there but that all my widgets had disappeared completely! So I went back in to Presentation and removed the newly added text widget. Thankfully my widgets then reappeared. Do you know what happened and how I can try again without fear of my blog presentation going haywire or getting skewered?

I think what’s happened is that you had just kept the default configuration for you sidebar; when you add a widget, it makes all the others disappear. If you want to add a new widget in future, take a look at how your sidebar looks first on your blog and write down what you see (recent posts, comments, etc). You can then just drag all the widgets into your sidebar and recreate it easily, plus add the extras you want.

http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/12/24/using-the-text-widget/I’m not sure why the Feedburner link isn’t working… perhaps there’s a more basic code? From memory I think Feedburner offers two; one is a form code, the other a link code. You want to scroll down to the link code and copy that into the widget. Is that the one you’re using? I’d double check the code with Feedburner, but if it still doesn’t work can you paste it here between backticks (the key next to the 1 on your keyboard) so we can have a look?

Thanks for the advise. I’m having some internet difficulties at the moment so unable to try your recommendations (the joys of blogging and using the internet from the Kingdom…) but I will let you know my results once I am able to try them.

Another alternative is explained here http://dissfunktional.wordpress.com/2007/12/01/offer-email-updates-to-your-readers-on-wordpresscom/
