Reader snippet: can be from excerpt rather than post text?

Can WordPress be made to use the post excerpt as the descriptor in the Reader instead of using text from the post?

Additional Context: Months ago if there was no text on the page the excerpt seems to have been used as the Reader snippet/descriptor. Now that doesn’t appear to happen, just the image in the post is shown… please advise on if there are ways to consistently impact the presentation in Reader, specifically while using a free site. ~ Thanks

  • Hi there,

How the Reader displays your posts depends on the content of the individual post. You can find a detailed description here:

I’m guessing you’re referring to your most recent post, https://crisiscomic.wordpress.com/2021/10/19/the-covid-sensor-system/, correct? That one used the image card because 1) the image was big enough, and 2), there’s no text content on the page.

On point 2, for a text excerpt to appear in the Reader card, the text must be in the actual body of the post. The Reader doesn’t look at custom excerpts set in the editor at all – those are only used by the theme, if you have a theme that displays excerpts on the posts page.

Thanks for the clarity. (Yes, you were looking at the correct post). Ugh… I do wish a) a post excerpt took precedence over any (or no) text in the body and b) the feature image, if used (regardless of how many images are in the post) would be the only image shown… but at least I now know how the Reader handles presentation. ~ Thanks
