Reader Subscription WhatTheHeck?

    Howdy!

After the OP posted to this forum thread https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/my-site-appears-to-be-reblogging-another-wp-com-site/ I subscribed on her WP site with the email address (email visible only to moderators and staff) that was once, but is no longer, associated with another of my other WPcom accounts. (I changed the email on that account a long time ago to (email visible only to moderators and staff) )

However, when I logged in today to that other WPcom account, I was astonished to find that the eileen blog appears in my followed sites!

Can someone help me figure out what’s going on? Why and how is that email address ((email visible only to moderators and staff)) still associated with my other account?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just chiming in from the affected account.

  • Good Morning –

Thanks for getting in touch about this, justjennifer. I haven’t experienced this before and will do some digging. Will report back here with updates.

  • After searching I am unable to find any active uses of the old email address on WordPress.com. There’s not an account associated with it. I can see where it was changed on the user account years ago as you’ve mentioned.

Is there forwarding of any kind set up for that old email address? Perhaps that’s the clue.

I’m going to have a colleague check behind me to make sure I’ve not missed anything here.

  • How odd. I cannot find any reason as to why that blog would end up under your followed sites. Your old email no longer has any connection to a WordPress.com account in our system, so I’m not sure how this was possible.

Have you tried subscribing to another blog with that email to see if it also shows up in the Reader? If not, test it out and report back here. Curious if others will show up.

    Thanks,

    Hi folks, and thanks.

staff-zinnia – Just to be clear, I’m referring to the appearance of eileen’s blog in my Reader list in my other account.

When I subscribed with (email visible only to moderators and staff), I also confirmed the subscription to eileen’s blog at that same email address. I was not prompted to log in to my other account at all as a part of confirming the subscription. It looks to be completely independent, as it should be, so don’t understand how the site is showing up in my Reader list on that other account.

staff-doublebassd – I have not tried subscribing to another site with that same email address, but I give it a try and let y’all know how that goes.

*edited to add, I’m trying to find another ORG site that is using jetpack subscriptions, so it may take a bit of doing.

Thanks for helping solve this mystery.

That didn’t take as long as I thought. :)

Yes, the new site I’m following at (email visible only to moderators and staff) shows up in the Reader management dashboard for my other account. I’ve uploaded 2 screenshots to wpcommaven’s Media Library.

    I’m stumped!

  • Anytime – keep us updated. This is a very unusual and if it is affecting others as well, we’d want to pinpoint the issue ASAP.

Hey staff-doublebassd – I updated just above your reply. :)

  • When you confirmed the subscription, were you also logged into WordPress.com as justjennifer?

Hey staff-blorbo – I was not logged in to any WPcom account when I confirmed these 2 subscriptions.

  • Hi Jennifer,

I think I might have a clue: your other email is still listed as a secondary email on your yourwpcomcierge Gravatar profile, so I’m guessing the system associated the follow with the primary email’s account as well.

I tried replicating this on my end, subscribing to a site using an email that’s the secondary on another Gravatar account, but the same thing is not happening to me. I still think it’s worth testing, though:

Can you log into Gravatar and remove that secondary email. Then unfollow the site in the Reader as yourwpcomcierge, unsubscribe with the other email as well, and then resubscribe using that email to see if this happens again.

@kokkieh – So removing the email address from the WPcom account (over a year ago at least) did not remove it from Gravatar? Yikes! o_O

I’ll try your suggestion when I’m back online later. Thanks again.

  • So removing the email address from the WPcom account (over a year ago at least) did not remove it from Gravatar?

    Doesn’t appear so, no.

That’s also something I’m not able to replicate, so that could have been due to an issue that has since been fixed.

I think the Gravatar connection could explain why this is happening. I’ll also test from a different older account (what to do – over 13 years they tend to collect) and let you know what happens.

Here’s what I plan to do:
    1. Log in to old account, change admin email and confirm it.
    2. Log in to Gravatar to see what email addresses are associated with the account.

If you think I should test differently, just let me know.

Can you log into Gravatar [as yourwpcomcierge] and remove that secondary email.

    Done.

Then unfollow the site in the Reader as yourwpcomcierge

Done. I also logged out of Gravatar and WPcom prior to the next step.

unsubscribe with the other email as well

if you mean unsubscribe via the confirmation emails sent to (email visible only to moderators and staff) then, done.

and then resubscribe using that email to see if this happens again.

I’m going to give this a day’s rest before resubscribing so things on the back end catch up and the site owners don’t feel like they are being spammed. I’ll let you know what happens.

As far as testing with another older account, will do that shortly.

Sounds great, we’ll be waiting for your findings :)

    Thanks!

As far as testing with another older account, will do that shortly.

    1. Log in to old account, change admin email and confirm it.
    2. Log in to Gravatar to see what email addresses are associated with the account.

Here’s the results after waiting a couple of hours before looking at Gravatar:
After changing the account email address in another old WPcom account and confirming it, Gravatar currently lists both the new email address (primary) and the old email address.

    ¯_(ツ)_/¯

and then resubscribe using that email to see if this happens again.

After removing the (email visible only to moderators and staff) secondary email from yourwpcomcierge’s Gravatar account as requested, logging out entirely from WPcom, deleting cache and cookies, I resubscribed to one site with the (email visible only to moderators and staff) email and the subscription showed up in yourwpcomcierge’s Reader dashboard.

Given that there may be caching going on, how long should I wait before trying to resubscribe to the second site I’d previously subscribed to by email?

  • Thanks a lot for all the details @justjennifer. This a ver odd issue and I’ve reached out to our team responsible for the Reader. We’ll get back to you as soon as we have an update from them.
