Reader view

@designsimply
It is true. WP makes changes without consulting its users.
You field the feedback and promise to listen and then nothing changes.
The new reader is a retrograde step, if you are really listening then please do something about it! -
I have to say that the worst change with the reader is not being able to quickly follow a blog if I like the post. I believe others find liking or following blogs a nuisance now, as my traffic and engagement plummeted since this new change was implemented. I usually spend most of the day sorting through dozens, if not hundreds, of likes and follows and now, my readers are not liking or commenting and I am not getting nearly as many new followers per day. Please change this back so that in READER people that like my recent posts can easily follow my blog without leaving the READER! Please!

Now, clicking the post (even while holding Ctrl as you indicated in an earlier post) “slides” to the single-post view
This might be a bug.
I just tried tested using Chrome 43.0.2357.132, Firefox 39.0, and Safari 8.0.7 on Mac OS X 10.10.4 and Internet Explorer 11 and Chrome 43 on Windows 8.1, and Chrome on Windows was the only browser where that didn’t work for me. It’s possible that Ctrl + Click shortcut won’t work on Windows Chrome because of the browser itself, but I will see if someone can help me get that checked out to make sure. If you are using a different browser than one that I noted above, can you please tell me your browser and OS versions?

And in some cases when “sliding” back to the feed the Reader jumps back to the top, rather than the last post viewed, causing one to have to scroll all the way back down. I’ve not been able see any pattern to this yet, it appears random, but is very frustrating.
What browser version? I haven’t seen this but will watch out for it too.
-
For me personally placing the blog title at the top again, as I mentioned above, would solve this.
This is done! Please try refreshing your browser or close and re-open it.

not being able to quickly follow a blog if I like the post
@italianrentalblog, from the main Reader page, the follow link is in the “…” or “more” menu (the three dots).
Another way to follow would be to click on the site name (the site title not the post title) and then tap or click “Following” at the top right.
For me, the “…” menu is faster than going to the blog feed view.

I’m using Firefox 39.0 on Windows 7 and Windows Vista. On both computers, if I hover over the post title the actual post URL appears at the bottom of the browser, but clicking and Ctrl-clicking both go to the single-post view in the Reader, rather than the blog itself.Regarding the feed jumping to the top, I looked around some more and it appears that that happened if I clicked the blog title instead of the post title. With the previous version of the Reader I remember if you viewed the specific blog’s feed (as opposed to a single post) and then used the browser back-button to return to the Reader it also went back to the top, so probably not a bug. What most likely happened was that I clicked the blog title by mistake as it was so close to the post title. That’s obviously not a problem anymore :)
This is done! Please try refreshing your browser or close and re-open it.
Thanks. For me, at least, skimming through the feed is much easier now.

I’ve come to this link because I too HATE the reader changes. I’ve not got anything extra to add, but to add my voice to those who are unhappy. Her are my peeves: One click please – ‘people can usually find their way’ is a very poor attitude. Why does it need two clicks anyway? The side bar only comes up sometimes for me, so I have to click several times to find full posts. I also want word count not how long you think I will take me to read something. What is really making me mad is that posts now don’t open in a new window. I like to look through the reader, opening the posts I want to read then I can open them between doing other things without hunting through the reader each time. Finally I want to see the blog I’m reading not the white background! I know all these point have already been answered, so I’m not expecting answers, I’m adding my voice to the dissatisfaction because my reading experience is so frustrating and off putting.- whatever WP’s reasons for making changes.
-
Another change for change’s sake. I too prefer the old word count to someone else’s decision on how long it should take me to read something. And I preferred the old viewer to this new massive whole screen thing. And it’s not at all intuitive as to how to get straight to the actual blog any more, though it can be done. And the little recommended sites section has disappeared. And – why is it no longer highlighting the top image on the blog post – it appears to be completely random now, meaning I have no control over how it’s seen in the reader.
What are the benefits of this change supposed to be? Is there some amazing addition to funtionality that I’m missing?

I like reading that way too. Can you try command-clicking (Mac) or control-clicking the post title in the main Reader page to see if it opens them in a new window? That should be working for most browsers, and if it isn’t for yours can you please tell me your browser and OS versions?
-
@fictionfanakaff, stay tuned for more updates please. We may make some changes to some of the things you mentioned, but it’s still being worked out. Thanks for providing feedback!

Is it? Are you sure? -
Wow, the new getting to a post on Reader is so klutzy, tabs galore and no fun working my way back to where I started. Yet I see the mobile version still has the time click which takes me straight to a post. Am I missing something?

I asked you how readers (and I will add, especially those new to WordPress) know to click twice on the post title twice to get to the original blog.
Your answer:
“How did they know to what to click on before? People can usually find their way. On WordPress itself, clicking the post title is a common way to click through to a post. For search engines, the post title is a better and more descriptive link.”People can find their way?? Why should people have to try to find their way? This is technology, not a treasure hunt. You should not have to view a white background version of someone’s blog, then click again to find the REAL one. We need ONE click…don’t care what you call it, but it should be obvious…like “blog” or “read more” . And in regards to your question…when they changed the link to a word count, I only found this out by coming to these forums and stumbling upon a post about it.
Same way I just found out that the “dot, dot, dot” icon at the right hand side of each blog is another way to get to the blog, but again, two clicks and why so discreet? Another secret door we are supposed to discover or “find our way”. Just call it “blog” and link it up for ONE click please.
Because of the number of clicks, many readers are going to simply read posts in the weird white background, a version we did not create or approve of for our material. That is why they give us these beautiful themes to pick from, but if the first click gives them the whole post, they will probably read it there…perhaps never ever visiting people’s actual blogs. Very strange set up.

Coming home on the bus I tried to read posts on WordPress in the reader but I was told the browser was not supported and needed to be updated. My phone is Winodws 8.1 Internet Explorer 11. I could get to the dashboard and my blog but I wanted to read posts of blogs I was following.
-
Yet I see the mobile version still has the time click which takes me straight to a post. Am I missing something?
@pattikuche, the web version has been updated, and it sounds like you might be looking at an app on your phone instead of using a browser.
The latest changes currently affect the web Reader only; we’re working on bringing these improvements to our iOS and Android apps too.
-
@mishunderstood, we are going to see if we can make an update about that. Please be patient for a little while.
@rainbowjunkiecorner, thanks for the note about the Windows phone. I will look into it.

I must admit, I was confused when the new reader changes came up. I find it to be less user friendly, crowded making it difficult to decipher between posts & I do not need to know your estimate as to how long wordpress assumes it might take me to read a post. Please change it back.
