Reader view

@mishunderstood, likes are at the top right in the full post Reader view. Likes with Gravatars are only shown on the original post, same as always. One of the really helpful things the Reader full post view does is makes it easier to get content while using slow internet connections.

I’ll add my voice to those believe that there should be a direct, obvious, one-click access from the reader to a blog.

    This is now done.

    @designsimply
    That is simply not true!
Nothing makes this change an improvement.
I admire your stoicism in defending it!

IMO a single link direct to the post, sans any excerpt would be a superior choice. Then readers with slow connections would not be faffing about in the WordPress.COM Reader. They would click a single link and arrive on the blog to read the post where it was published. And, if all other links for likes, reblogging and commenting were removed too then the WordPress.COM Reader would function the way I want it to.

I have a couple of complaints about the new way the reader is working.
    1. Poems are sometimes displayed as straight sentences instead of broken up into multiple lines (i.e. haikus).

    2. I also detest the “interim page”.

    a. I should be directed to the writer’s blog not some white background with their writing. It is also doesn’t seem fair to those who are paying for their blogs to have that barrier.

    b. I also don’t like that I can read the entire poem on the “interim page” without being directed to go to the writer’s blog in the case of longer poems. I know I like it when someone has to come to my blog to read my writing so I can have a more accurate idea of traffic.

@timethief, single-click links were added today.

@danrmcgaffin, let me look into the poetry.

Yay! You made me smile and it’s been over a year since wordpress.com changes evoked a smile from me. :) Thank you for that.

Now that I have sang all my practice scales while answering questions here it’s time to log out and get to work at beautifying myself for the concert tonight. I intend to lift the rafters and even shatter wineglasses tonight. ;) If all goes according to plan, I may prove one does not have to be either a plump or overweight big mama to be able to hit all the high notes and still have rich tone.

It makes me wonder, since one of the major reasons given for these changes is to have (other) pages load faster for slower computers,…

Are a majority of readers using slow computers?
If not, is wordpress trying to attract readers with slow computers?

And then, have studies been done indicating that a significant number of people with slow computers also love reading blogs?

  • Unknown's avatar

Nope, but speed is always a factor.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks, that makes more sense.

To designsimply: I checked out the Reader today and yesterday and found that my blog posts do not have the picture used for the post, but another blog that reblogs every one of my blog posts does have the picture used for the post.

    How is that fair?

Why isn’t the picture showing up on my blog posts in the Reader?

Here’s a screenshot: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lorri37/19132920194/ First one on the Reader shows the reblog, then my blog post follows.

    I’m confused.

Yet, I’m still being directed to those awful white pages, whether I click on the photo or the title from the feed.
Also, the titles in the feed are showing up below the photos, not above them.

@danrmcgaffin, I’ve found out a bit more about the issue where poetry is sometimes displayed in a single line. Currently, that is happening because summary feeds are now displaying excerpts as provided by the feed with no extra formatting. Someone is going to see about fixing up excerpts so they look better.

You can switch to “full text” feeds on your WP Admin > Settings > Reading page as a temporarily workaround for that or you can wait for an update with better excerpt formatting.

  • Unknown's avatar

@crystaltwilight, the direct link is for the links that say “visit,” which is similar to how it was in the Reader in the past.

  • Unknown's avatar

@dandelionsalad, pictures were removed from summary feeds based on complaints from other blog owners. You can see some of the complaints here in the forums or in the comments at https://en.blog.wordpress.com/2015/07/13/reader-refresh/

Currently, you can get images back by going to WP Admin > Settings > Reading and changing the feed option from “Summary” to “Full text.”

If enough people complain about missing images for summary feeds and want them added back, we may consider another change! (Maybe there’s some better middle ground?) It will depend on how much feedback we get as well as using metrics and trying to make a balanced decision with readers’ best interests at heart.

Sorry the switch took you by surprise!

  • Unknown's avatar

@designsimply, thanks for getting back so quickly.

Actually I prefer no images at all, like others. But why do the blogs that only do reblogging get to have pictures?

If all the posts don’t have pictures, that’s fine with me. But that is not the case. Some do and some don’t.

I will not change my setting to full text no matter what.

This is just another example of why I would never recommend WP to anyone again.

I see it now on the bottom right. Can it be in blue color, like the #tag link on the bottom left?

I’m not sure wordpress understands how much these interim pages are like a slap in the face to bloggers. It’s comparable to having items taken off the shelf in a store and replaced with pictures. It’s not the real thing. And really, if creative and customized blogs are such an awful thing for readers to see that direct viewing must be circumvented with showing white-washed versions, then it begs the question why wordpress doesn’t sell something else. Jeez. It even seems wordpress reluctantly added this small direct link because of duress caused by all the complaints.

Why is so much preference being given to the white page versions instead of the actual blog? I am just really struggling with understanding how wordpress deems these pages more important, especially when it has such a negative impact on bloggers and readers.

Can we know which metrics are being looked at?

The writing has become a lighter color which isn’t very cool for my eye-sight :I
