Readers are not getting my replies to their comments. How do I fix that?

When I reply to someone who has commented on my blog, they are not receiving the reply by email. I would like my readers to get my replies without having to follow the entire thread of comments. I have read the following page but still can’t figure out why readers are not getting my replies to their comments: http://en.support.wordpress.com/comment-reply-via-email/

That is about you replying using email to post your comment, not about the reader receiving an email.
Readers have to opt-in to receive emails, by ticking the box “Notify me of follow-up comments via email.”

When I post a comment on other wordpress blogs, I don’t specify that I want to be notified of follow-up comments yet I get replies to my comments by email. That’s why I’m kinda confused about it. I guess you’re saying that, with WordPress, no one will get a response to their comment on my blog unless they check the “notify me…” box on my blog. Right?

At one point WP set the default for that checkbox to checked, so that may have lead to the confusion. People complained as it meant inboxes were flooded. WP then set the default back to unchecked.
