Readers delete own comments

Is there a way of preventing readers from deleting their own comments?

When I reply and then they delete the original comment, it looks as if I am talking to myself.

    Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

That capability has never existed here at wordpress.COM. Only the site’s owner ie. Admin can delete comments left by someone else on their site.

    Thank you for your reply.
Well, I can confirm that one of my readers deleted his comment a few days after I had replied. Which meant I also had to delete mine, because it began to look as if it was addressed to the poster before him.

To make sure… are you saying that readers cannot delete own comments?

  • Hi there,

What you’re saying is not possible. There is no way for a regular reader on a site to delete or even edit a comment. Only Admins and Editors on a site can delete comments, and Authors can delete comments on their own posts.

What is the link of the specific post where the comment was deleted, and what is the username of the person who’d made that comment?

Your site’s logs do show that several comments have recently been deleted, but all of them were deleted by your username account. If you didn’t do that, it’s possible someone else has gained access to your account, so I’d recommend changing your password on both WordPress.com and your email account as a precaution.

OK. The post link is: https://saltypoems.wordpress.com/2017/04/15/the-lie-of-never-born-never-die/

I deleted the two last comments of my own. However, the previous (reader’s) comment was deleted by someone else. The person was anonymous, but I have their email address.

Another strange occurance was when I was writing a new post, and suddenly someone’s posting appeared in the middle of it. The content was related to what I was writing about, the same topic. When I refreshed the page after being stupefied by where that came from – it disappeared. But I made a screenshot before refreshing the page, which registered part of the content that came from nowhere.

You might be correct, and someone migh have gain access to my account.

  • I don’t see any sign in the logs of a comment being deleted from that post, but someone else having access to your account is the only thing that would explain this. Please update your password immediately, and consider adding two-factor authentication to your account as well.

    Two Step Authentication

I agree that there must have been a security breach or such.

I have updated the password for WordPress. I will be completely changing my account credentials soon, including email. Then I will set up the two-step authentication.

    Thank you for your assisstance.

  • You’re very welcome :)
