Readers unable to comment on my WP.org blog via WP Reader
-
Recently a couple of followers have reported that they can no longer comment on my site via WP Reader and need to go to my actual website to do so. Can you help? My site is: http://www.retirementreflections.com.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi dconnollyislandgmailcom,
I’ve checked your site in the Reader and the comment box is being displayed for me (under “MORE IN RETIREMENT_REFLECTIONS”).
Which posts are your followers are having trouble commenting on? Have they said what happens when they try to comment?
-
Thank you so much for your reply.
I had another self-hosted blogger try to comment on my recent post via WordPress Reader. This is the error message that she received:
“There has been an unexpected error while loading the comments”.
She sent a screenshot but I was unsure of how to attach it.I had a second blogger (also self-hosted) try to comment on my last post via Reader. She also received an error message ““Could not retrieve comments for requested post”
I greatly appreciate any help that you can give.
Donna

A Third Blogger wrote to say that she received the following error message when responding to my last post, “Sorry – there was a problem posting your comment.”

It’d be best to have those folks get in touch with us directly so that we can take a better look at their accounts. Feel free to send them the link to this thread and they can comment right here for us.
-
Thank you for your quick reply.
Those were just a couple of bloggers that I asked to check my site for me. I haven’t found any of them who could comment on my site successfully through Reader, but they said that they can comment on other WP blogs that way.
-
Could you upload the screenshot to wordpress.com/media ? We can look at it that way.
Also if you’ll send a link to the post in the reader, we could test comment there.
-
Thank you so much for your prompt replies and continued support. You guys ROCK!
I have uploaded the Screenshot to wordpress.com/media.Here is the link to one of the post that readers had difficulty commenting upon.

@dconnollyislandgmailcom Thank you. I actually see the same issue here with that link.
A couple of questions:
– Is this happening with all posts on your site now?
– I noticed you only show part of the post in the reader, so one has to visit the post to read it anyway. Is that a recent change on your site?
-
Thank you again for your quick reply.
To my understanding, this is happening to all posts on my site now. (Although I can comment on them from Reader).
A few months back, I set my settings to have only the summary of my posts show. I have unclicked that now so that the full posts show. Can you check if that makes a difference from your end. Here is another recent post that followers said they could not access through Reader.

Hi there,
The comment box is working for me as well for every one of your posts that I opened in the Reader. Can you please share your visitor’s screenshot you mentioned earlier with a tool like https://snag.gy/ as I’m not able to access your Media Library?
-
Thank you so much for your continued support and suggestions. This is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks. This is odd, on my end I see a message saying we couldn’t fetch comments.
Is there any chance it’s working some times of day but not others?
https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/46001081/posts/1867682983#commentsIf your server or site gets a lot heavier traffic at some times and the feature that fetches new comments is timing out, that might make sense.
Can you confirm whether people are able to comment from the reader some times but not others?
-
Thank you for your continued help. I just had another blogger check again on a different post of mine. She received the message “Could not receive comments for the requested post”. I have very little traffic right now as I have not posted for a week, and have only posted twice this month (I’ve been on a bit of a blogging break). Any other help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I see your site’s RSS feed is at an unusual location. Normally a site’s feed can be found at “URL/feed”, so https://www.retirementreflections.com/feed in the case of your site, but the feed the Reader is pulling in for your site is at http://www.retirementreflections.com/?feed=rss2
Are you using a plugin on your site to create a separate RSS feed from the one automatically created by the WordPress software?
I wonder if this might be preventing the Reader from correctly fetching comments on your site, so I’ve asked our Reader team to take a look. I’ll update you once I hear back from them.
-
Thank you for your assistance and insight. I greatly appreciate you sharing this concern with the WP Reader Team. I would love to get this glitch solved.
I don’t purposely use a plug-in to create a separate RSS Feed.
Here is the list of the plug-ins that are currently enabled on my site:
AddToAnyShare Buttons
Askismet Anti-Spam
Comment Reply Email Notification
Easy Image Collage
Google Analytics for WordPress by MonsterInsights
Instagram Feed
Jetpack by WordPress
Menu Icons
Pinterest by Best/Websoft
Real Simple SSL
Real Simple SSL Pro
WP Fastest Cache
WP Forms Lite
Yoast SEOWhen I typed http://www.retirementreflections.com/feed/ into my browser all of my recent posts were listed
Thank you for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

I wonder if it’s the caching plugin. Can you try temporarily disabling that?
Also to clear, I’m able to get the posts. But not the comments, while in the reader.
-
Thank you so much for your continued prompt assistance.
I have just gone in and disabled my caching plugin. I have also disabled by Real Simple SSL plugin.
Yes, it is the comments that users say they cannot use or access for my site on Reader.
Fingers crossed this will make the difference! -
I’m still getting “Could not retrieve comments” … hmm :(
Would you be willing to temporarily disable your other plugins as well?
-
Thank you so much for all of your prompt support…especially on a weekend.
I just disabled three of my more recent plugins:Comment Reply Email Notification
Easy Image Collage
Google Analytics for WordPress by MonsterInsightsDoes that do the trick?
