Readers want to post pictures of their pets. Possible?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me. My blog is very new, and my readers are wondering if there is a place they can post pictures and stories about their pets, other than the comment section (does the comment section even allow photos other than the avatar?).

My readers are about as technologically deficient as I am (which is nearly techno-dead), and whatever I offer them must be easy to do, and viewable to other blog visitors.

How do I do this? Here is my blog: http.//susanmcelroy.wordpress.com

I worship at your lotus feet,
    Susan

pics are easy just download from your file

They can leave pictures in the comment section but the pictures would need to be uploaded elsewhere (photobucket, for instance) and they’d need to do the html coding. It’s probably not the best solution for your readers.

The only other thing you can do is invite people to become authors on your blog. They’d need wordpress.com accounts (not necessarily blogs) and an invitation from you. Then they can post in the same way you do. You don’t have to give them administrative access to your blog.

But really, blogs like this are not designed for the kind of interaction you seem to be proposing. You might be better with a wiki.

Oh, another suggestion would be to set up a contact page and encourage readers to email you the pictures/stories which you could then post. That gives you a bit more control as well.

    Rosclarke, you said:

“set up a contact page and encourage readers to email you the pictures/stories which you could then post.”

This sounds like a good possibility! Now, could I put that Invitation in a text widget? And could I add a link there they could click on from that text widget to automatically take them to a comment page? Or is there another process for this I am missing??

    Sorry, I’m a dunce. ^.^

Yes, you can do that. In a text widget, you could call it Contact, and put something like “Email your photos to me here…” and insert your email address. Use dot and at rather than . and @ to fool spambots (hopefully!).

Don’t put your email address on your blog. The safest way is to use a contact form: http://support.wordpress.com/contact-form/

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, I hear you to use a contact form for better spam protection. In this form, can people post pictures??

Also, ronsrealm said I could put it in the text widget and the support site says I can’t. Is that true? No sidebar contact forms, or has this changed?

People can never post pictures to your blog, either in the content or in the comments section. What they can do is email you pictures and you can put them up. You should reconfigure your email so spammers can’t find it, but if you do so it’s safe to post. See http://onecoolsite.wordpress.com for tips on how to do that.

The Contact form does not support attachments, but they can include a URL if they’ve already uploaded the pic somewhere, which they probably haven’t.

Rosclarke says that you can add a picture to someone’s comment on your blog. I can’t figure out to do that when they send me the picture and I upload it to my Gallery. The window asking for a link opens, but I can’t make the link to the picture in the Gallery. I can add to one of my pages, but not to someone’s comment on my page. I can see the html code, but I can’t copy it over to the comment page. Can anyone help?

You can never add a picture in someone’s comment at WordPress.com. It is not allowed.

I think Ros was thinking that the pictures would already be uploaded and they could put a link to them in the comment. They could do that.
