Readmill Question
-
I want to add the Readmill widget to my page. But, it says my story needs to be either in PDF or EPUB format. What do I have to do to so that my stories are ready to be downloaded via Readmill. In other words how do you convert the story to the appropriate file type?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey Derek,
Matthew here from Readmill. You’ll need to copy paste your text into a word processor, and choose to export the document as either ePub or PDF format.
Here’s a good tutorial: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/epub-file-ipad-nook-kobo/
Then upload that file somewhere, point the Readmill widget to its location, and then your readers will be able to send the PDF or ePub directly to Readmill. If you need further help, please drop us a line!

Thanks,
Matthew. -
Oh, and you can also use this plugin that’ll transform your posts into ePub :)

Cool! Thanks Matthew! Do you have any suggestions for somewhere to upload to for me to point the widget towards? Preferably somewhere free. :o)

There is no FTP access to our free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we bloggers cannot install plugins or upload third party themes.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/#uploading-custom-themesRead WordPress.com vs WordPress.org > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
FTP access, plugins and third party themes are available only for VIP bloggers http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ or for those with WordPress.ORG installs.
WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate. As I said above there is no upgrade aside from being VIP hosted http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ that you can purchase to install plugins. They cannot be installed by bloggers on any free hosted WordPress.com blog.
if you require plugins you hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install. http://wordpress.org/ Then you move your content from the free hosted WordPress.com blog into the WordPress.org install. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/

Dropbox is a great, free place to upload material. Put the ePub/PDF in your “Public” folder, and make sure you use the *direct* download link from Dropbox, and not just the url.

Thanks Matthew. I guess our conversation was moot point. lol. Judging from what TimeThief just posted. I guess if I want that widget to work I have upgrade to premium. *sigh*
Thanks for your help anyway.

Hey Derek,
Not true. You simply need to supply a download link to the Readmill widget, which can be external from WordPress entirely, and is available to free WordPress users. Give it a go: upload the book to Dropbox, get the link, paste it into the Readmill widget, and you’re good to go.

@derekhastings
I did not suggest upgrading to premium. http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/ In fact that upgrade does not provide FTP access or the ability to upload plugins. Only VIP hosted blogs like CNN have that ability.Listen to what matthewcbostock advises immediately above my comment https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/readmill-question?replies=8#post-1273724

Ok. Thanks you two. I just want to say that the help I get from these forums is pretty much amazing. I have been on other forums for various things and often never even get a reply. Let alone two people that tag team to make sure I get the right info. Thank you guys for that. You all Rock.
