Ready to move subscribers and followers to a self-hosted site
-
I’m going to leave the new followers where they are temporarily as our developers try to sort out what’s going on.
I’ll keep you posted.
-
Hi Jackie – any news on this? Mainly wondering so I can plan the next few (or several) days accordingly. Thanks!
-
I’ve tried setting your WordPress.com site to “private” to resolve a conflict in our system between the two sites, and migrated your new WordPress.com followers to your Jetpack site.
Users who go to your WordPress.com address will still be redirected to your self-hosted site, so you shouldn’t notice any change in that. Now, however, your self-hosted site’s notifications should all be working properly and all new followers should appear on that site.
If this is not the case, or if you run into any other troubles with this, please let me know.
-
OK, will let you know. Setting the old site to “private” however leads to another problem. :)
For some reason, not all photos were successfully migrated when I moved the site, but were instead linked to their location on the old site. Here’s an example, where photos are not appearing because they were made private:

All the photos here have URLs similar to this:
http://pirancafe.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/piran-029.jpgI have no idea how many posts are affected by this.

Okay that’s interesting. When you did the export of your content, your images should have been uploaded to your new site. The way we do this, the export file contains links for the attachments, and your new site should have grabbed everything and updated the permalinks for the images accordingly.
Could you check your new site’s media library and see what was or was not exported over?
You might try returning your WordPress.com site to public by logging in at pirancafe.wordpress.com/wp-admin/ and going to Settings > Reading. You could also try doing another export (with your WordPress.com site set to public) and importing it into a test site on your hosting to see if the images transfer for you.

In short, the migration was a mini-nightmare. Since so many didn’t make the transition, I republished many of the ‘missing’ photos on the new site before taking the URL live, so at this point I’d rather just continue republishing missing photos as I discover them. But that’s a different issue (I think).
I’ll see if this ‘private’ setting changes the subscriber notifications with my next post tomorrow. If so, I’ll just keep the old site private.
-
Hmm, sorry to hear about the nightmarish migration. WordPress.com > WordPress.org migration of content shouldn’t be so much trouble.
Please keep me posted on the issue of your followers and let’s see if we can’t at least get *that* working! :)

G’morning – It appears that keeping the old blog private didn’t do anything about the notifications. They still aren’t working –my latest post is not appearing in the reader.
Is there a way I can add the reader subscribers manually? I had nearly a thousand and some of them were actually genuinely interested in the blog. And I genuinely interested in keeping in touch with them. :)
Given the wide scale of the photo problem mentioned above, I’m going to change the setting on the old blog from private back to public again.

my latest post is not appearing in the reader.
Could you try to subscribe to your own site again, using the subscription widget you’ve added to your sidebar?
Let me know if it helps.

Your shouldn’t have to add them again manually.
I checked our email logs for some of your email subscribers, and they received a notification about your latest post. Something seems to be off with WordPress.com Followers, though.
I’ll look into further to find out why your posts do not appear in your followers’ Reader. I’ll get back to you as soon as I have some news. -
I tried to enter the email address associated with this account again and was told that I was already a subscriber. But I didn’t receive any notification at that address.
And yes, I was referring to the WordPress.com subscribers – posts not appearing in their readers.
Is there anything else I need to do from the main jetpack page here: http://www.pirancafe.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=jetpack

It looks like we’re still trying to figure out what happened here.
Can you confirm whether or not your previous WordPress.com followers are able to see your posts in their Reader now or not?
-
It sounds like your issue is part of a larger one we’re still trying to resolve.
In the meantime, what I would suggest is the following:
1) Encourage your WordPress.com followers to follow you via email.
2) Do a new export/import of your WordPress.com site to see if your images get transferred over; if you wish, I can generate an export link for you.
3) Set your WordPress.com site to private again after you resolve the issue with your image links (you shouldn’t need to rely on your WordPress.com site to host image files now).Let me know if you want to give this a try.

Hi – sorry for delay with reply, I’m currently traveling.
I’m extremely hesitant to do another import/export. I’ve made too many manual changes since making the initial switch. At this point I don’t have much faith in the process. :)
I don’t plan to rely on WordPress.com to host image files – I’m adding those daily to the new site, one by one as I discover them. Many made the trip over to the new host, but were not attached to posts correctly. I’ll be dedicating a few hours a day over the next few weeks to finishing this and will then set the wordpress.com blog to private.
This is probably not related but thought I’d mention this anyway: a friend passed this along last night, but I’m not sure what it means. Can you help explain?
“Bob, pirancafe.com is having some DNS issues. pirancafe.com resolves (correctly, I assume) to 69.195.124.152, but that then redirects to http://www.pirancafe.com, which either doesn’t resolve at all, or times out before resolving. You might want to check your DNS service?”

As far as your content goes, one of our developers said we could try running a script that could help you get all of your images and content moved over. If you don’t want to mess with your live site, if you set up a new installation of WordPress at a subdomain, we could try an export into that to see if that worked. Let me know if you’d like to try that.
As far as your DNS issues, it looks like your domain is correctly pointing to your new hosting provider, which appears to be Bluehost. You might check with them to see if there’s anything else you need to do on their end. You could also try adding a CNAME record for for www to pirancafe.com or an A record to that IP in your domain administration area. Since your domain is still registered with us, you can follow the instructions here to access your domain admin:
