Real Time Stats Widget Oddity

Just an interesting observation. I started a new WordPress blog and added a little widget from http://whos.amung.us that shows in real time on any given page or post how many readers are viewing my blog at that moment. I’ll notice, say, “4” (3 + my own) viewers on that widget. Since my blog is new, it’s easy to keep track of the hits right now. So when I view the graph on WordPress blog stats, I noticed that my stat bar doesn’t rise with each one of these hits, despite what the widget has just told me. Either WordPress isn’t catching all the hits or there’s something I’m not understanding. If you’ve never seen the Whos Amung Us widget you can see it at the bottom of my sidebar (http://presentsofmind.wordpress.com).

There is a small delay in the dashboard stats, but not that much. Probably what’s happening is the widget is counting bots, which WP.com does not count.

Also: every single stat counter out there counts different things as a “hit”. No two will ever agree on a count, except by coincidence. What’s important is to see the trends; if one indicates a big change in one direction, but another does not, something is probably broken somewhere.

I guess I don’t understand why today my stats graph reads twelve points higher than the total number of “top posts and pages.” That twelve-point descrepancy probably isn’t a “big change,” right?

It’s people looking at your main blog page itself, rather than any particular post or page.
