Really basic: How do update WP and how do I I tell what version I am running?

Just starting out with all this so definitely still climbing the steep part of the learning curve…

I’ve got a site set up on a domain hosted elsewhere (I already owned the domain, and was able to install WP through the hosting company’s “Control Panel” > “Softaculous” installer. Looking there, on the hosting services website, it appears they install v.4.9.5. Took me a while to think I had to look there to find this, seems like something that should be directly discoverable to the admin via the WP site itself, but that doesn’t seem to be the case (really?). Maybe I’ve just missed it, but I’ve been searching way to long.

What prompted this question: I’m wrestling with managing/personalizing/customizing my site. Some of it’s straightforward, some of it seems incredibly confusing (to this longtime IT guy).

I’m finding that a lot of what’s described across various internet sites (including this one) do not appear to match my installation – as an example, I’ll be damned if I can find anything that’s labeled as a “dashboard” in mine, but that appears to be the beating heart of the thing (all the settings I’m trying to tweak appear to be buried in that). My experience seems so different from what I see everywhere, I’m wondering exactly what I’ve got. Did I actually get a years-old version installed? Beats me, I can’t tell.

I’m looking to confirm 1) what version am I really running (I can find no place where this is revealed), and 2) what is the current/latest release version of WP (beats me – can’t find it here, I gave up and just Googled that). 3) If I have what’s current, why can’t I find any of the controls that are so commonly referenced? 4) How the heck do I update WP if/when it turns out I do not have the latest release?

Now I’m wondering if I have a crippled installation because I chose not to migrate my hosting to wordpress.com. Is there a penalty for that?

Thanks for trying to point me in the right direction. More dumb questions that make me feel like a moron soon to follow.

hermanistan.com is hosted on WordPress.com and it is on the most current version of WordPress. You don’t have to upgrade it.

    Hi there,

You’ll find your My Site’s Dashboard here https://wordpress.com/sites If you only have one site here on WordPressdotcom, that link should redirect you to your site’s daily stats page, but everything down the left side is what you use to manage your site here.

The My Sites/Calypso dashboard was created especially for WordPress.com users and for sites connected to WordPress.com via the Jetpack plugin.

If you are looking for the WP Admin dashboard, you can find it by adding /wp-admin/ to the end of your site’s URL.

As @kosiew mentioned, we are always on the latest version of WordPress +1 with some additional features being rolled out. You’ll never need to manually update your WordPress.com site as that is all done for users by our Support devs.

Additionally, if you have any upgrade plan, you also have access to direct Support via Live Chat when available and email when you post via the contact form at https://wordpress.com/help/contact You do need to be logged in with the username that purchased the upgrade.

Hope that helps, but let us know if you have any other question.
