Rearrange categories
-
WP categories are listed alphabetically. I have a category titled ‘Public’ that I would like to move to the top of the categories list. If I were to change the name to ‘Free’ would that automatically rearrange it by the letter ‘F’ and if so, is there anything that would be adversely affected by doing this? I’d like to do this without using another plugin?

Hi,
Changing “Public” to “Free” will rearrange the order of appearance. But if you shared a link to the Category Archives in the past, I believe anyone following it will get “Page not found” errors.
(for example, https://yoursitename.wordpress.com/category/public/)It seems that only the Business and eCommerce plans allow you to adjust permalinks. See this support article for more information:

Hi
Yes that answers my question, thanks. We’re relatively new and there aren’t that many posts that we placed into the “Public” category SO, I created a new category titled “Free Public Access” which moved this free category to the top, which is what I wanted to do. I’m filtering all older posts that were placed into the public category and then moving them to the new Free Public Access category. I’ve logged out on the office PC and then accessed our site to see if those posts I moved are now still accessible to the public and voila, they are, so this method worked just fine for me. Thanks for your help and input!
