Rearranging Page Listing, Help Please

  • Unknown's avatar

I hope I ask this correctly!

I have added a few pages (as opposed to posts) which appear in my sidebar as links. Applause and small bow. However, is there any way to alter the ORDER in which those links appear? It looks as if the first written is on the bottom, with above it the next written, etc. Can I rearrange the way those links appear?

New at this, and I greatly appreciate the help!!

The usual suggestion is to copy the links, rearrange them in whatever order you like, and put that in a text widget. Then remove the Pages widget. I think the Pages widget is alphabetical.

Thank you, raincoaster. It worked great. I’m still trying to figure out the limitations of an account hosted over on wordpress.com as opposed to my own site and you’ve been a great help!

Thanks; fortunately, you asked an easy question!

Nope, the pages widget just displays the pages. You alter the order they’re displayed in the pages tab. Initially all the pages have the same number (0 i believe) so they default to displaying alphabeticaly. You can alter that by changing the ‘Page Order number’ using 0 – 9. 0 has top priority and 9 has the lowest priority. Simpler this way than fafing around with text widgets.

Really? I’ve never seen that. Where do you get the Page Order Number? And where do you change it? In the Write Page view?

from your dash board go to manage > pages edit the page. In the window is the page as it is now and the usual text editor. Ignore that (unless your altering the page content of course), and look to the right of the screen. You’ll see a side bar with a list of options. The very last one is page order, click the ‘+’ symbol to open it up and you’ll see a single box with a niumber in it. Just change the number to whatever you need (0-9 only i think, havent had more than a few pages so im not 100% sure on that point), finally save the page. Do that for all your pages and they’ll be reordered in the order you set. Take a look at my blog, thats how i set up the pages for mine :)

lol glad i could be of some use for once instead of being the one asking the questions heheh

Oh wow. Thanks for that; I had never seen that before. Very useful!

I have found that on some themes changing the page order as described above by tiamatsdisciple works and on others it doesn’t.
    Mark supplied this remedy http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/07/can-i-sort-my-pages/

That’s a very useful tip on how to change the order of pages. Many thanks for that – I was running out of early alphabet page titles once I had got to Aardvark … ;-)

Meanwhile, I was wondering if there were any way to change the title of the main display page in Cutline ?

It defaults to ‘Front Page’, and I’d like to know if that can be changed. ‘Home’ would be a usefully shorter alternative, for example.

All titles on all themes here default to the front page and you can create a static front page called “Home” if you wish. http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/02/20/having-a-static-page-at-the-front-of-the-blog/
And although you haven’t asked this Cutline has instructions for images http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/09/23/cutline-and-images/

Road, afraid not. It’s hard coded into the theme.

Many thanks for that, Timethief and drmike.

I just tried hard-coding a page called ‘Home’ and putting it on the front page, but then it shows me ‘Front Page’ as well as ‘Home’ in the navigation top bar – so that doesn’t quite solve it, unfortunately. I’ll live with that ‘Front Page’ name.

Concerning Cutline and images – there doesn’t seem to be a styling issue any more. I think the theme has been revised so that it handles images just fine now. Anyway, it works for me.

Meanwhile, I see that Chris Pearson on pearsonified.com has just released a new theme called ‘Copyblogger’ – that one looks like it might make an interesting good addition to WP.com, too.

Thanks a lot again for your help and suggestions – much appreciated, as always.
