Reblog comment and more tag

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. When I reblog, I’m finding the length of the reblogged content way too long. On my home, category and search results pages I usually use the more tag to just show an excerpt so that readers can quickly see all of the posts in that category without scrolling through the full text of each post.

This works fine apart from when a post is a reblog, where it shows my intro/comment and then a large amount of the post from the other site.

So I was wondering why the more tag isn’t working if I put it in reblog, or why the reblogged content is so long when presumably it should just be a short amount. If I’d known it would be so long I would have just put a link to the other site instead of reblogging.

Example of the problem on a category page:

    Thanks

Apologies, the search results page is even more strange. It is omitting the content before the more tag on my blog posts and not showing the reblog comment on reblogs. Separate issue, will raise another forum post for this.

  • Hi Emily,

It’s not possible to edit the content in anyway of the reblogged post. You can’t place a more tag as well because the excerpt length is dynamic as you might have guessed.

As for your second issue, I’m not seeing a problem with your own posts – the content before the more tag is showing fine at my end. Here’s an example.

However, the reblogged posts are indeed not showing your comments. You might want to open a new thread for that, it could be your theme’s behavior.

Hi ehtis, thanks for the reply. With the more tag, I mean putting it in the start of the reblog, the bit I get to write before the original post is quoted.

Also with the search page you linked to the results of, I found you’re right on the first one but not the second, which is definitely omitting the first paragraph for some reason!

I will raise the other issue about reblogged posts not showing correctly in the search results.

  • Okay, I just tested the reblogged posts in search results. Used a different theme than yours, and the comments are showing just fine.

It’s a problem with The Big Brother Theme.

  • Read your reply now.

Yes, putting the more tag even in comment doesn’t seem to be working. But I don’t understand the need of putting “more” tag in a comment. That way, none of the reblogged excerpt would be shown, neither your remaining comment unless someone specifically opens the full post.

Also, in the second search result, I’m actually seeing the first paragraph of your post. Here is what’s being shown in the search result:

My post asking you to let me know how your pharmacy has helped you is also generating some great tips from people with M.E. on remembering to take your medication, so I’ve started this post to collect your suggestions.

It is not appending […] at the end of this paragraph though.

  • Dug more, and indeed some of the posts are stripping off the first paragraph in search result. My bad.

However, the other issue of comments on reblogged posts not showing is related to your theme.

Thanks both Ehtis and timethief. It’s a shame as I really like this theme for its simplicity and ease of reading for people with M.E., the condition I write about.

My question about the reblogged posts on home and category pages is about them being far too long really. Maybe if I am wanting the home and category pages not to show so much content I should use a different theme that just shows post titles. I don’t want to have to create a static page to have to remember to keep adding titles and using the shortcodes to do it, the formatting isn’t so good. The reason I don’t want lengthy posts on category pages is because I want readers to see posts about projects I’d like them to contribute to and don’t want these posts to get buried too far down the category pages or they won’t be seen. It is probably a theme thing though.

You can control the length of every post your publish on your blog. The setting here > Settings > Reading is only for the RSS Feed summary and does not affect the posts.

If you want to display only excerpts on the front page of the blog followed by read more links, you can insert “the more tag” into each post prior to publication.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/
Note that what’s displayed on the front page or main page for posts is usually what’s displayed on the category pages as well.

The read more tag can be inserted once only into any post to change the front page or main page for posts display from full post to an excerpt. The split in the text does not display to you in preview mode but it will be there after the post is published.

Alternatively, you can switch to using a theme that automatically displays front page excerpts. This is a list of only SOME active themes on WordPress.com that use the excerpt instead of full post content. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-with-automatic-excerpts?replies=13#post-1396410

I should use a different theme that just shows post titles

There is no feature filter for that but Themes Staff will be able to tell you which them es meet that criteria when they get to this thread. Please be patient while waiting.

Hi, yes I’m using the more tag on every post. Originally I asked why using the more tag within the comment that precedes the quote from the reblogged post doesn’t shorten that because the reblogging is making huge long posts. I would have thought only a few sentences would be fine and I’m wondering why it is showing so much of reblogged posts.

    Hi Emily,

It looked into this and do see that the “Read More” tag is not splitting content correctly when used in a reblogged post. I’ve let our developers know and will let you know when I hear back.

I have did some testing and a reblogged post currently shows about the first 900 characters. Due to the nature of reblogged posts this can not be edited (as others have said). With that being said, the length that shows up on the archive page will depend on the theme you are using.

In my test the Twenty Ten theme showed only the first 175 characters on the category page and none of my summary.

Regarding other themes, if you have photos you could try a grid theme like Gazette or Cubic
    https://wordpress.com/themes/gazette/
    https://wordpress.com/themes/cubic/

You could also try a theme that list the titles large like Afterlight or Cyanotype
    https://wordpress.com/themes/afterlight/
    https://wordpress.com/themes/cyanotype/

You’ll find all theme options at:

Thanks for the great information bdukes. I’m starting to not like this theme with the problems so I think I will check out your recommendations.

Another problem I noticed is the “Related” section isn’t showing up at all even though I have it selected to be shown in the settings. I don’t know if I should raise that separately or if you are able to pass that on for me? I’ve just tried some other themes and “Related” doesn’t show up on those either.

    Thanks again for your help.

the “Related” section isn’t showing up at all even though I have it selected to be shown in the settings.

Related post will only show once enough content is on the site that we can suggest related content. According to the Related Posts support page before the related posts section will show up the following must be true:

    • At least 10 published posts
    • At least 500 bytes (about 100 words) per post
    • Theme other than Expound, Traveler, Opti, or Currents

From taking a look at your site it appears you don’t yet meet these requirements.

Ah right, I see now, thanks for the info.
