Reblogging abuse

    What can I do to stop a reblog abuser? From time to time my content gets reblogged and when I track it back it is on a site that is ONLY REBLOGGED CONTENT, no about page, no personal posting at all. What makes me particularly angry is that in some instances the same blog post is entered more than once in the same day! Saturday, two of my posts were reblogged by this person: http://amirperzada.wordpress.com/ I think they are a spammer, but I’m not savvy enough to understand what their game is. Also, my spam box was full of notices from this Amirperzada, two of which were bonafide spam.

    I read that you intend to keep reblogging alive and well, but wish that you would consider making it optional. In other words, we could elect to have reblogging clicked on or off, and to make it entirely fair, if we selected off, then of course we would not be able to reblog others content.

    I am certain that this could be set up, and many of us would be very grateful for the option.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Report the blog as what it is a spam blog. If you are logged in to a WordPress.com account and locate a blog you would like to report, simply move your mouse over the blog menu on the far left of the admin bar, and you will see Report this content which will allow you to send Staff a report.

    If you find only reblogged content on a site, you can notify WordPress.com of a possible spam site (especially if there are any kind of user placed ads on that site) by hovering your cursor over the site name in the top left of the Admin Bar and using the “report this content” link, give your reasons on why you are reporting that site (your username and email address will automatically be added to the report you send).

    However, here’s what WordPress.com has to say about reblogs: http://en.support.wordpress.com/reblogs/#are-there-any-restrictions-on-who-can-reblog-posts

    Please note, though, that reblogging is not the same as lifting an entire post without attribution, and so WordPress.com will not remove reblogged posts under the DMCA. If you’re not comfortable with others being able to reblog your content, you may want to make your site private.

    If you’ve looked through past forum posts, you know that many of us longtime WordPress.com users don’t look at reblogging charitably.

    @justjennifer
    No problem and good day or shall I say good evening to you. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    @justjennifer, if we don’t like it why do they keep it? I really think that making it OPTIONAL would be the fair thing to do.

    It would certainly make it obvious how many of us don’t like it.
    Thanks for your help!

    @timethief Thank you for your help. I wondered about turning them in, but wasn’t certain that what they are doing was bonafide spam or abuse.

    Anyone can copy and paste and rip off your content in seconds flat. Anyone can subscribe to the RSS feed and rip off your content in seconds flat. Reblogs are not full posts and due to the convenience of clicking a single button to reblog they may even deter some content theft.

    The reblog feature was discussed heatedly here in the forum when it came out – it is not universally liked

    Along the lines of what @TT said above – yes Reblog is quick and there are some blogs that are mostly Reblogs – on the GOOD side – a Reblog requires someone to visit your site to see the full Post – so you should get a bit more traffic – that as opposed to someone that copies the whole Post – where someone does not even need to visit your site for anything – and many of the copy and paste crowd do not put links back – so your content is copied but you don’t know it –

    I agree reblogging is very annoying. There is an individual whose most of his site is reblogs but not enough for WP to consider it a spam site. I have asked him to remove my posts, which he does but he says I need to change how my blog is presented as it appears in his reader. There is no way to stop him reblogging it and why should I make my blog private. There should be an opt in and out option like there is for pressing, pinterest and other social media.

    The individual seems to reblog the entire post not just an extract which then of course means there is no reason for the reader to visit my blog for the rest of the post so essentially accrediting me is pointless and I consider it as stealing my work and breaching copyright.

    Then report the copyright violation.

    Is there anywhere that it says that reblogging the entire post isnt allowed? I cant find anything? The individual removes my posts on request but this is the 3rd time he has done it and it is very annoying.

    From patientgardener above: “…There should be an opt in and out option…”

    That was my point too, Patientgardener. It should be a choice, and if we as an individuals choose to turn off the reblog feature, then we are either all in or we are all out.

    Sadly, it seems the suggestion will not be taken to heart by the staff here at WordPress. I wonder what would happen if they actually asked their users about this option?

    @patientgardener
    Every reblog is machine generated and is only an excerpt. Unless your posts are extremely short posts then if someone is posting whole posts that is without any doubt at all not a software generated reblog at all.

    Don’t waste time commiserating here. Report the copyright violation.

    A tell-tale clue that he knows he’s a spammer is that he is claiming it’s somehow your fault, for the way your RSS feed is configured. This is a classic spammer thing, claiming “oh, you syndicate your content, therefore I can use it all.” If he’s scraping your RSS feed, WP.com will destroy his blog like THAT!
