Rebuild site while maintaining current one?

I’m getting ready to rebuild our site and wondering if it’s possible to do so while keeping the current site up and running.

I want to start from scratch. My blog site is my church’s website and it’s time for a redesign. I’d like to have a new theme, new pages, menus, etc, but keep the same domain name. I’m wondering if there is a way to build the new site “behind closed doors” while keeping the old one up. Make sense???

Thanks for any help!

You can make the whole blog “private” and change the theme and work on it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
Alternatively you can create a static front page and use it temporarily. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/
However, I wouldn’t do either on my blogs as traffic is important to me and I don’t want to turn any visitors away. What I would do is change themes and work on the blog while it’s public.
Changing themes is easy to do and no data is ever lost. However, a new theme may have different sidebars and footers for widgets. You can go here Dashboard > Appearance > Themes and select a new theme and activate it. After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.
