Receiving referals from the WordPress Dashboard

  • Unknown's avatar

I am curious about something I have been noticing recently. I have been receiving referals from the WordPress Dashboard, however I can not figure out how this is happening. Does this mean that I have a post that is receiving recognition? Can someone please fill me in on how I am receiving referals from the Dashboard? Thank you. Craig

I’ve seen that in the last few days.

My guess is your blog is on the top posts or fastest growing or recent posts lists.

I am confused as I do not see my name in the top posts, top blogs, top dog or top anything in the dashboard. I am looking forward to clarity. Thank you for your time and kindness!

I don’t know what the update frequency on top blogs and top posts is. But recent posts must update pretty quickly. They might have clicked through from there.

But I wouldn’t worry about it.

I’ve seen this too, and I have definitely not been on the top posts.
    (I’m having a bit of a slump) :(

Well, at least it’s not just me.

when you write a blog, it goes into the dashboard section under “latest posts”. people are likely just clicking on you from there.

you probably won’t be seeing it yourself because it all changes so quickly…

My blog is about a month old. I have never been on the top anything, but would like to find out how. Can you help me?

not a clue here. just blog what you love and if you get a top billing that will just be icing on top of the cake my friend.

Very few people make it to any of the Top lists. If they did, it wouldn’t be called “Top”. You’ll appear on the Recent Posts list for some people if the timing is right.

As second said, though, just blog what you love. Get an audience going. If other bloggers like your stuff, they might link back to you, which improves your visibility. Comment on other people’s blogs. That also improves visibility. If your audience gets big enough and participate in commenting, you might appear on a top list.

The main thing is don’t stress over it. People will come if they are interested. Just make sure all your entries are tagged correctly to match the subject. It may take years to become a “Top”, if ever, but that’s not the point. Your blog is for your thoughts and expressions. Be glad for the visitors you get. It’s better to have a few close people that identify with your entries than a random mass that keeps tripping over your blog because it’s in a top list. :-)

Oh.. and if you happen to do photography and have a Flickr account, blog about your photos and provide links on the pages within Flickr. The photos in your blog will drive traffic to your Flickr pages, and the links on the photo pages will drive traffic to your blog.

    abbydonkrafts,

thanks for the feedback! in the grand scheme of things you are right. i’ll keep writing that which i am passionate about.

I’m glad I could put it into perspective. :-)

I’d been wondering about this, too. I’m only a week old (waaaa!), don’t have a lot of posts up yet, but I’m getting referrals from the dashboard. I’m not interested in being the “top blog” on my block, but agree with abbydonkrafts that blogging with passion is the best! I don’t know how these webcrawler thingys work, but noticed I have gotten tagged a few times, and was able to find some of my own posts through the big tag cloud page http://wordpress.com/tags/ when I click on a topic my blog MIGHT be about. You have to scroll back far enough to find the date you wrote your post, ie. “2 days ago” etc. People might be clicking in from there. Thanks for asking this question, second, and y’all for replying.

museditions. Welcome to the world of the bloggosphere. Lots to learn. You will find your way. Be encouraged. With everything there is a learning curve and you are right on course. If you find yourself discouraged at times, realize that I was there too when I first started this process on February 6, 2007 and I am still learning. All is good. Learning is good.

God bless you in your process my friend. One day at a time. Craig

  • The Dashboard includes a “Latest Posts” section where recent blog posts are listed. These change pretty frequently because we have lots of posts here :-)

The other possibilities include “Fastest Growing WordPress.com blogs” section and “Top Posts from around WordPress.com”, which as others have mentioned very few posts actually end up on.

Thank you for the clarity Joseph. Can I ask you a favor, if my blog or post (s) ever reach the status of being heralded as top anything, please send me a memo via email. Thank you for your time and kindness Sir. God bless you.

    Have a simply amazing day.

Craig, that would be a brilliant idea! Surely it could be automated, too. I hope the staff do that, because it’s very motivating when people see their blogs up there. Of course, Cheezburger and CNN can turn notification off because they’ll be getting those notices every day.
