Receiving ‘Something went wrong…’ notification after choosing free plan

Hi, I was about to set up a new site using the free plan but I received an error as described in the Subject of this enquiry. I have tried refreshing the page and even making sure that I don’t tick any paid feature.

For the record, some years ago I have made a free WordPress site (and abandoned it when I decided to go with hosting on my own server) with this account however it already got terminated and removed when I last checked and now it doesn’t shown on my list. I wonder if that is related to this error.

Thank you and I’m looking forward for the help :)

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  • Hi there,

What is the URL of the site you are trying to create?

If you are trying to reuse the site URL that you deleted years ago, you will not be able to. If a site has been deleted for more than 30 days, it has been purged and cannot be restored.

    For more information, please visit:

    https://wordpress.com/support/delete-site/#reverse-a-site-deletion

That may be related to the error you are receiving, but let me know what site URL you are trying to register.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

Thank you for your response :) For the URL that I wanted to create, it is “pworks.wordpress.com”. I’ve tried typing it on my address bar and it seems like no one use it yet at the moment.

I don’t plan to use reuse my previous URL so I believe it is not the issue. One more thing to add is that I received the error message right after I clicked the free plan so I haven’t even landed to a page that lets me check the URL availability.

I hope the extra information will help and I’m looking forward for any new response :)

  • Hi there,

http://pworks.wordpress.com is actually a live site created back in 2009. You’re right that no one has seemed to have touched it since then, but if you are not the owner of the site, you’ll still need to reach out to them to see if they are willing to transfer the site over to you:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/transferring-a-site-to-another-wordpress-com-account/

You may be receiving that error because if you are trying to create that site, it is already registered under a different WordPress.com account. Since the site was made long ago, it would be a long shot to hear back from them if you reached out. I would say the best bet is to register a new site under a different URL.

The custom domain pworks.com appears to still be available for registration, so you can register that domain for your site and use it has the official URL:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/

If you attempt to create another URL and still receive the same error, let me know. That will convey that it is not associated with pworks.wordpress.com already being registered.

    Thanks!

Some years ago, as in 2009?

    Hi,

Thank you for the info regarding the URL that already been used. Just now I tried to access https://wordpress.com/start/domains?ref=calypso-sidebar to see if I can actually purchase a domain and it seem now I know where the problem is.

It says “You’re blocked from purchasing domains on WordPress.com. Please contact our support to find out why.” whenever I put any url in the seach bar.

As for this, if I remember correctly I made a free wordpress with the url “adicf21.wordpress.com” at the same year when I made this wordpress account so it probably around 2012.

Your site was suspended three years ago and as such, you wouldn’t be able to make any purchases under your account.

You can reach out regarding your site here and the Terms of Service team can better advise:

Please refrain from discussing Terms of Service issues on the public forums.

    Thank you!
