  How to remove “recent articles” from sidebar so that I can have larger area for content.

  I know it’s a widget, and I should be able to remove it under “appearances”, but the sidebar box is empty. I’m not sure why it’s still showing up.

  That’s a default widget which appears when you have no set widgets.

  If you want a completely blank sidebar, add a Text widget with no content to the sidebar.
