Recent comments widget displays "There are no public comments available to displ

A lot of users are reporting the above problem. This is probably the most useful widget ever and it no longer works for some.
However, it was reported that some blogs were OK…..
I have experimented and discovered that comments are seen if:
Your blog can be indexed by a search engine.
However, if you prefer that your blog is NOT seen by a search engine or, like me, if you prefer your site to be private; then recent comments are not displayed.
Heeeeeeeelllllppppp. This is a disaster!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It works for my private blog if I dont show gravatars.
Hopefully, this info should be enough for someone to realise what has gone wrong….

It’s almost back to where it was before the improvements ( what were they?)……..
However, comments made on Attachment pages no longer show in the widget.
