recent comments widget no longer displays comments on pages

recent comments widget no longer displays comments on pages. it had been doing so just fine for years. the check is in place beside ‘display comments on pages’ in the recent comments widget setting box. comments on posts continue to be displayed. can anyone explain why? thanks in advance for your support. my own guess is that someone may have inadvertently or maliciously placed a strange encoded symbol in a comment made on one of our blog’s pages about a fortnight ago (since when none of the page comments have been displayed on our recent comments widget). if so, how to find it, though?!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there! I checked it out and saw the problem there. Let me get back to you on this when I have one of our developers take a look. Sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused. Thanks for your patience!

Hi Stephen! Sorry about the delay. Just wanted to let you know that we are currently investigating the issue. Thank you!

Hello there!
I’ve heard back from the developers and they say they’ve spotted the bug. Unfortunately, it may take up to next week before they get to it. Sorry about that. In the meantime, I’ve given you 30 free credits to spend on any upgrade you desire. Thanks once again for your patience!

Andrew, thanks. It certainly is taking a long time, but I appreciate you seeing this through. Obviously not something I can fix myself. If something I did as administrator was responsible, please inform (after fixing it, OK). As to the 30 free credits, that’s kind, but please tell me if there’s any way I can use them to speed up loading the site and moving within the site. For the past month or two, our site has not been performing as it used to do (e.g. 20 secs rather than 2 secs to load, save a draft, or even move anywhere within our site). How far would 30 credits go to making an upgrade to premium? If I upgrade, will we automatically get back ordinary speed? Perhaps it is a fault with my own computer or browser (Chrome). Is upgrade a one-off payment? Sorry for the complex reply! Love WordPress, but currently still suffering.

Hi Tito,
Rest assured that the bug wasn’t a result of your actions.
I do apologize for the slowness you’re experiencing on our site. How are your loading times when visiting other websites? Can you kindly go through the steps outlined in our support page to troubleshoot issues with your browser?
As a further step, try running a traceroute to give us a better idea on how you’re connecting to our servers.
Please copy the results of the traceroute and include it in your reply so I can take a look.
As for the 30 credits, I’m afraid that using it on any upgrade won’t speed things up for you. You may only use the credits to purchase upgrades worth $30 or below. If you decide on purchasing something above that, let me know so I can give you the appropriate refund afterwards.
Thank you!

Andrew,
A number of days ago, I emptied my recent cache to see if it would help: no change in performance. It’s mainly WordPress that I seem to have this extra slow operation problem with (not just loading but doing anything within the site; other sites are largely OK. Wikipedia is rather slow, though, too, but not nearly as bad. I followed the instructions with a traceroute and here is the window as I copied it. My op. system is a Japanese Windows 7. The Japanese words simply say “Your request timed out” over and over again. I hope this helps.Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

Thanks for the information!
A persistent timeout would indicate a poor Internet connection or the connection is being interrupted somewhere in between.
Can you go into Users -> Personal Settings and see if you got “Always use HTTPS when visiting administration pages” checked?

If not, can you please turn on that option and see if there’s any improvement?
Looking forward to your reply!

Hello again! Happy to report that the issues you had with the Recent Comments widget have been resolved. Can you double-check if comments from pages now show up for you? Thank you!
-
Yes, thanks, Drue. The comments on pages are back! You hung in there with me and for that appreciation!
As to the ‘Always use HTTPS’, it was not switched on, so I’ve done that now … and the jury is out on whether or not it is making a difference. Will get back to you if still having problems.
All the best, Tito -
Hey Tito! You’re welcome. :)
Yes please get back to me if my suggestion helped in resolving your connection issues.

Dear Druesome,
You asked me to get back to you when I knew if your suggestion ‘Always use HTTPS’ had helped the connection speed. My judgement is that, yes, certainly going from my dashboard to Site Stats, for example, it is much improved. However, I still find the operation of most other things (saving edits, moving within the blog, etc.) much (four times!) slower than it was, say, two or three months ago …
and now there is a new problem, which I would also appreciate your help with. As of ten days or so, instead of getting 5-15 spam mails to delete each day, we now get 150-200! Why this sudden increase? If you think you can spot a spam comment that has lodged and is attracting other spam or something, please advise. Very sorry to bother you again.
Best regards,
Stephen Gill (Tito) -

Sadly, your Internet connection may be the likely culprit here. :( Please try to call up your ISP and sort out the issues you’re having. There really is not much we can do on our end at this point. Sorry about that!

The increase means that more spammers are targeting your site. Again, this is something that we can’t control. Rest assured that our spam filter, Akismet, takes care of this for you. You may opt not to receive emails every time a comment, spam or legit, is posted.
