Recent Commment – link not working
-
I wonder if my site is the only one with this particular problem (otherwise I suppose someone else would have reported it)?
I use the MistyLook theme, which has “Recent Posts” and “Recent Comments” in the right-hand sidebar. When I hover with my cursor over one of the Posts, I see the full path, and when I click, WordPress brings up the post. But when I hover over one of the Recent Comments, I get “Address: http:/” and WordPress brings up an Error page … or rather that’s what happens if I’m careless enough to point to the commenter’s name. All my authors are experiencing the same “problem”.
Is it simply a question of being very careful to point to the Post link and not to the commenter’s Name?
Could someone please explain what’s going on?
Thank you. -
Can you please give us a link to your blog so we can take a look? Starting with http. There’s a fad for just giving us blogname.wordpress.com and that’s going to slow everything down, since it’s not clickable.

Hi, Raincoaster … my blog is a closed, family members only … nothing particularly confidential but I’ve found another solution:
I’ve been looking at some public ones and can show you an example of what I’m speaking about:
http://bloglily.com/2008/03/06/it-was-like-you-know/
(I hope the Reply system permits URLs to be shown…)
If you visit that site, you’ll find “Recent Comments” on the right-hand side. One of these is by “drmiggy”. Let your cursor hover on “drmiggy” and you should see what I mean: “Address: http:/”. The name above and the name below don’t do that.
All my authors’ names do that. Any explanation?
Thanks for your patience … :-)

Thanks. It makes a huge difference if you’re WP.com or WP.org, which is why I always, always ask for the URL. You seem to know your way around, though.
I look at that comment and I see http:/// so my first assumption would be that he was signed out and put in the URL incorrectly, only his WP.com avatar is showing up in BOTH the comments and on the widget (it only shows on the widget if you’re signed out, not on the comments themselves). He has the domain name upgrade, and there has been some weirdness with that, so I’m wondering if it could be related.
Oh wait. Duh. If your blog is a private one, it’s entirely possible that WordPress.com has made their names unclickable in the widget, otherwise it could lead people directly to your blog. You might need to ask staff to be sure, though. This would indicate to me that Dr Miggy’s primary blog is probably private as well, although http://drmiggy.wordpress.com exists and has domain mapped to http://drmiggy.com.

What I mean is, if they’re signed into WP.com and their primary blog is a private one, maybe WP.com jiggered the Comments widget so it doesn’t trace back to the private blog when they comment on a different blog.

Hi, Raincoaster … sorry for not getting back to you.
I’ve been doing a bit of testing and think I may have found the solution to the mystery.
First, Public Blogs: If someone visits a public blogsite and is permitted to leave a comment on its posts, he has the option (together with his Name, Mail address and Comment) to leave a Website address. That’s the one showing after the commenter’s name. And, of course, if he doesn’t provide a website address, there’s nothing to show after his name. Hence: “Address: http:/”.
Next, Private Blogs: As part of his profile, a user can provide a Website name (Contact Info > Website). When he does so, it appears in connection with all subsequent comments (and actually continues to be shown even after it has been deleted from the user’s profile). When he doesn’t provide a website name, there’s nothing to show after his name under “Recent Comments”. Hence: “Address: http:/”.
Thanks for your feedback and help with solving this little mystery … :-)

PS, Raincoaster … any chance you could correct my typo in the topic heading, i.e. change “Commment” to “Comment” ? Would make it easier for a later user to find our discussion.
