Recent Firefox update broken WP functionality

Hi. I tweeted to Firefox about this problem and tagged WordPressdotcom into the tweet. WP replied asking me to use this contact form to tell them more, so here I am.

The recent Firefox update, which seems to be a tracking blocker feature and has been added to the left of the URL bar in Firefox, has stopped me being able to ‘Like’ a WordPress blog. Until now, pressing the Like button would allow me as a WP user to like a blog. Now, clicking the button brings up a blank popup window for a second, and does not add me to the list of ‘bloggers who like this’.

A second problem is my Notifications on WordPress. Normally, when I see a red dot on the bell in the upper right corner, I click it and it shows me a dropdown of the latest notifications. Since Firefox’s update, my Notifications dropdown is blank, although I did get a red dot over the bell, but that is all.

I have disabled Firefox’s feature on my own WordPress site and also on one other which has a blog post I want to Like, but disabling the feature has not restored the lost functionality.

If anyone has experienced this issue and been able to fix it, I’d love to hear how to do so.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi scottkaelenofficial,

Thanks for posting here. I noticed this thread has been marked as resolved, so does that mean you were able to find a solution for the issues you mentioned above?

The recent Firefox update, which seems to be a tracking blocker feature and has been added to the left of the URL bar in Firefox, has stopped me being able to ‘Like’ a WordPress blog.

Yes, I think this is likely to the cause. Safari recently made a similar change and people with the “Prevent cross-site tracking” option checked had trouble liking posts on WordPress.com.

It might be worth trying the following in Firefox. Go to Preferences > Privacy & Security > Tracking Protection and unchecking that option — it sounds like you may have tried this but I just want to double check.

If you don’t want to fully disable this Tracking Protection, WordPress.com can be added as an exception:

    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/tracking-protection#w_turn-tracking-protection-on-or-off

We are looking to see whether there is a way of preventing this behaviour but it seems unlikely at the moment.

Since Firefox’s update, my Notifications dropdown is blank, although I did get a red dot over the bell, but that is all.

I haven’t been able to replicate the blank notifications dropdown using Firefox Quantum. Which operating system are you using? It would be great if you could make a screenshot and upload it to your Media Library so I can take a closer look.

    Thanks!

    Hi, Gemma,

A helpful individual on Twitter gave me some advice similar to what you’ve suggested, and after a bit of scratching of heads it turns out that the problem was that my cookies and site data were disabled, but I’m sure I hadn’t set them to be. It’s my guess that the FF update might have changed my settings. So, after going to the “Cookies and site data” area of Privacy & Security, I chose to save cookies until they expire (which is what I thought it was set to anyway), and then I was able to choose “Trackers” in the Content Blocking options on the same page.

After the above changes were made, I was once again able to see my WP notifications and also the functionality of the Like button returned.

For your info, I’m using the latest version of Windows 10.

I marked the thread as Resolved but I couldn’t see a way of closing it. I didn’t think the resolution for others who might be having a similar problem, but here it is now. :)
