“Recent Posts” Widget in Andreas09 – Options No More?
-
Hello,
Last night I moved my blog over from another wordpress.com address to http://elizabethcoakleygray.wordpress.com. I set it up with the Andreas09 theme as at the old location. However, when I first set it up at the old location a few months ago, the “Recent Posts” widget allowed the usual options in Andreas09 as in many other themes (the option of changing the title, choosing how many posts would show). I wanted to use the same options at the new site as at the old one, but the “Recent Posts” widget now says it has no options in Andreas09.
Unfortunately in the process of trying to figure it out, I took the old “Recent Posts” widget off of the old site, and it won’t let me add it back with the old options, so I can’t show that it did indeed allow options at one time.
This is admittedly a small issue, but I’m a perfectionist (‘perfection’ here being represented by the image in my head), and I just want the thing to read “Recent Entries” and include 15 of them, dangit…
Does anyone know why the widget doesn’t allow options anymore, when it once did? Does anyone know if it will be changed to allow them again? Thanks…
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I put up Andrea09 on my test blog and then daug and dropped a “Reacent Posts” widget into the sidebar:
I opened it and this is what I see:
-
Title:
Number of comments to show: (at most 15)
Avatar Size (px):
Avatar background color:
Text background color:
Delete | CloseI have no idea what’s going on with your Recent Posts widget or why it is any different from the one I have. I can configure mine easily.
Which browser and version of it are you using please?
Have you cleared your cache and cookies and then tried logging in again? -
Thanks for replying…
I was using Firefox 3.5.8. I just cleared the cache & cookies, tried again, and got the same results: “There are no options for this widget.” Updated to Firefox 3.6, got the same results… Cleared cache & cookies again, got the same results… I also tried in (an admittedly old version of) IE, same thing.
If I change to another theme (Black-LetterHead, for example), I do have the options to change title, number of posts, etc., but if I then drag that version of “Recent Posts” into the Inactive Widgets area, and go back to Andreas09, it’s not there in the Inactive Widgets.
I just noticed in your response that you say “Number of comments to show” rather than “Number of posts”… Did you try with the “Recent Comments” widgets instead of “Recent Posts”?
Thanks…

In case it helps…
I don’t know if this link will work or not, but this should show you Google’s cached version of my old blog from back in January… If it works, you should see where I had at the time titled my “Recent Posts” area “Recently Written” and it was showing 15 posts. Just to show that Andreas09 did previously include options with that widget, though it doesn’t (at least for me!) now…
(If the link doesn’t work but you want to take a look, you could type in “veta coakley gray” at Google & look at the cached version of the first listing, which should be titled “writing, mostly about writing”.)

Holy Guacomole! You are right. Just tried the correct one … DUH and this is what I got for Andreas09:
-
Recent Posts
There are no options for this widget.

Delete | CloseI wonder why it was changed. Time to ask Staff. http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

Thanks, I’ll write them & see what they say. And possibly beg them to change it back. I swear it used to work… *weeps*
Thanks for your help!

I’m sorry I fumbled at the beginning there. Thanks for your patience. Please post again after Staff gets back to you so we are aware of the outcome and good luck!

Just an update… They got back to me & said they can’t see that any such change has been made with Andreas09, and suggested that perhaps I was actually thinking of Andreas04. Then they explained to me that they don’t add widget options to themes that have never had them because it messes up people’s widgets. A little frustrating to be told that in this case of course…
I replied sending the cached version from Google as I did above (I didn’t originally include it because I thought they’d be able to see the option had been there, of course) and explaining again… That was more than 24 hours ago and still no response, but hopefully they’ll look into it again…

There has been an update on this. Please see > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/recent-posts-sidebar-widget-display-problem?replies=8#post-443865

I did get another response from support this morning, explaining that they made some changes to code a few weeks ago, and that they had just put back the generic options widget for “Recent Posts,” and renamed the newer one (the one without options) as “Andreas09 Recent Posts.”
Unfortunately as the poster in that other thread pointed out, if you use the generic options widget now, the spacing between titles is gone (it remains if you use the widget without options). It’s frustrating but I don’t want to go complaining to them about that… Anyway I think I’ve found a solution by adding a short dash to the beginning of each post title, so it makes it clearer in the list which are separate titles and which are multi-line single titles. I like the effect enough, I just might do the same with my links in the other sidebar, as well!
Thanks for all your help!
(should I post this on the other thread, as well?)

Well, the dash in front of the titles did achieve some separation and ordering and they do not appear to be reflected in the URLs, so you are now the inventor of a work-around. :)
