I’m getting flooded by spam over the last month — many bogus messages per day as comments on my blog. Why? What can I do to limit this?

    This is typical:

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword….wait there’s even more Now what if i told you there was a simple WordPress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That’s right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. [redacted]

    Hey Art!

I’m sorry you’re having trouble with spam comments. It looks like Akismet caught the particular comment you mention so you shouldn’t have actually received notification of it. It should have just been sent to your Spam folder here:

    https://artkilgour.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?comment_status=spam

Did you receive an email notification of the comment?

It’s hard to completely eradicate spam comments from your blog. If a lot of the spam comments have a common string of text, I suggest adding that string to your blacklist:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-blacklist

You can use the comment author’s name, IP address, web site, as well as the comment itself. Please make sure the word is not something contained in non-spam comments. For example, if you enter “press” as a blacklisted word, “WordPress” will match.

Also, please mark those comments as spam (if they aren’t already marked as spam) instead of just deleting. Our Akismet anti-spam engine tries to learn from a pattern of the comments that are marked as spam.

    jeremy:

okay, i’ve checked out your suggestions.

first of all, i have two blogs, and i realize now that the bulk of the spam is on my work blog, not my personal one, which i referred to above.

the work one is slightly more complicated, because it’s wordpress powered, but not hosted. it’s at http://www.writedesign.ca.

but that said, i assume your comments still apply?

    1. the comment i sent you was NOT caught by the wordpress filter. i’m receiving notice of all the spam comments. that’s the problem! i don’t want to turn off comments, but i’m getting 10-20 per day. very frustrating. and this is new, in the last month or two. i never had spam comments before.

are you sure the comments are going through the Akismet filter? i don’t think so. does it need to be invoked somehow?

    2. there is no common text string, IP address, username. so the blacklist thing is useless.

    3. yes, i mark the comments as spam, but this is irritating and annoying. i marked 131 comments this morning.

    any other ideas?

P.S. i meant to say above “i don’t want to turn off email notifications of comments” not “i don’t want to turn off comments”.

    Hi Art,

the work one is slightly more complicated, because it’s wordpress powered, but not hosted. it’s at http://www.writedesign.ca.

This is actually a big difference. To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities. At WordPress.com, we provide hosting, support, and tons of features for blogs. Users also have the option to purchase a variety of upgrades to customize the look and feel of their blog. WordPress.org is a software for self-hosted sites. With WordPress.org, users are provided access to all backend files and can upload custom themes and plugins.

Check here to learn more about the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Are you using the Akismet plugin?

    Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection

Unfortunately we have no access to your files as you are self-hosted. If you were hosted through us I’d be able to take a look. If you are using the Akismet plugin try looking at the support page for it and see if it helps:

If you are still unable to stop this, can you please contact Akismet directly as they would be able to dig deeper into this:
