Recently added wp ads make a mess of my home page!

  • Unknown's avatar

All of a sudden in my free wordpress.com blog’s home page a couple of ads have been added, which link to my first featured post excerpt. These ads heavily interfere with the layout I chose (Expound theme, recently retired). I’m sure WP didn’t mean to force me to either get rid of this theme or move to premium plans. Just as Highshrinck member (see: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/help-expound-theme-suddenly-retired?replies=19), I haven’t found any other theme which really fit my contents. I am being explained that retired themes may be used on sites created before they were retired. So, please, change position to wp ads and give me back a clean home page!

    Hi There,

Keegan here, I would be happy to help.

Since I am not in the same area, I can’t see the same ads or how they are affecting your site. It does seem like your theme has been retired which would explain why ads are affecting the layout. You might have to choose between purchasing a plan or changing your theme. Changing to a newer theme will help with the layout issues, but you still may have ads showing on your site. You can read more about how ads are shown here – https://wordads.co/faq/

Currently the only way to remove ads from free WordPress.com sites are to upgrade to a paid plan. It is not possible to change the position of the ads or remove them without a plan.

You can review the plans offered by WordPress.com here – https://wordpress.com/plans/

    Hi Keegansingh,
thank you for your quick reply.
How can I send you a jpg of my homepage, just to show how these new ads affect my site?
I know that free plans imply ads on my pages – actually I have had lots of ads published since the first day of my site. This time anyway more ads were put in a position which just destroy the previous design, that’s the point.
    Thank you for your attention

I understand your frustration. The ad layouts may change from time to time to accommodate updated themes that are still supported. To share a screenshot you could use a service like cloudup.com, but just know that we still won’t be able to remove or change the ads position.

Please consider either changing your theme, or updating to a paid plan. You can check out other free themes here, if you would rather not upgrade. – https://wordpress.com/themes/

Please see these themes as they may give you a similar layout –

Can I ask a tangential question, about getting a Personal Plan to prevent ads from cluttering up a site? If a client just paid to renew a cust. domain registration ($18), but now wants to get the Personal Plan, for $28/year…does the $28 payment cause a credit of the $18 renewal?

It seems relevant, but if I need to open a new thread, that’s cool…just thought this might save time/space.

    Thanks,
    Steve

    @skellermwd1

Please open new threads for new topics/questions :)

Can you please provide the URL/domain you are working on? And, have you already purchased a domain and would like to upgrade your plan?

Paid plans come included with a domain, so if you have not purchased a domain yet, just purchase your personal plan and you will receive a credit for a free domain upgrade.

Credits apply if you update a plan to a higher plan, depending on how much time you have left on the plan. As for whether you will get credit back for a purchased domain I’m not sure, so I am tagging this thread with modlook for staff to followup, please be patient while you wait for their reply.

The url is beezholgatestation.com, and the domain was purchased a year ago, through WP.com, with the renewal billing date of 8/22/17, and actual year start-date of 9/21/17. It seems the $18 and the $28 would be redundant, for the domain fees…

I just have to present this in a coherent manner to the client, so I appreciate your time and I will wait to hear from your Modlook people.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Okay I see your situation now.

You can upgrade your plan to receive your domain credit, when you go to renew your domain you will see a message showing that the domain is being purchased with a credit. You can read more about this process here under step #9https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/#instructions-for-registering-a-new-domain

  • Unknown's avatar

To clarify, You will receive a credit for a domain if there is already a custom domain registered on your account. Please let me know if that answers your question! :)

    Hey Keegan,
The $18 the client pays each year, is for a custom domain, so I would think if we got the upgrade, there would be a credit of $18.

Here is what I see on the “My Domains” page…
    beezholgatestation.com Active – renews on August 22, 2018
This is your Primary Domain; the domains below will redirect to it.
    beezholgatestation.wordpress.com Never Expires

  • Unknown's avatar

That is correct, you will have a credit applied to your plan purchase if you already own a custom domain upgrade.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks…will pass this info on.

  • Hi @skellermwd1, the credit you get depends on how much time you have left for the upgrade. For more questions, please start a new thread so we aren’t bombarding the original poster with unrelated notifications.

@contrattempi, you can upload a screenshot to your media library at wordpress.com/media if you’d like.

  • Also, I’m curious about this:

a couple of ads have been added, which link to my first featured post excerpt.

If they’re actually ads, usually they’ll link to some other site, so I’m wondering if something else is afoot. Are you referring to the two puzzle piece things at the top? They seem to be a part of your header design.

Hi Supernovia, you can see a screenshot of my homepage here: http://wp.me/a6v6Yf-no
That screenshot will show you what I meant: ads appearing (not linked, sorry for my English!) below the excerpt of the first post in my homepage.
More: I saw other free wordpress sites using Expound which do not show any advertisement in the same position. See: https://giornalistascalcinato.wordpress.com/
    https://iononfaccioniente.wordpress.com/
    https://italiaexpress.wordpress.com/
    I wonder why…
    Could you help me?

  • Thanks. I’ll report this since that placement does seem a bit odd. Will let you know what we find.
