Reclaim username
-
I have an old site nancyupnorth.wordpress.com that I want to revive. Problem is it is registered to an old email. When I enter my wordpress login and password, I try to update the information, but it tells me my username (nancyupnorth) is already in use. I know; it’s mine. But how can I get wordpress.com to recognize that this is me and the site is mine? Too many years, usernames and passwords later, and I am lost! Can someone help?

Hi,
When I enter my wordpress login and password, I try to update the information, but it tells me my username (nancyupnorth) is already in use.
Let me know if I’ve understood. You are able to log in, but are foiled when you attempt to change the username to nancyupnorth. Is that correct?
If so, this is not surprising. You can’t change the username to one that already exists, regardless of whether that username belongs to you. The thing to do would be to transfer it to the account with the username nancyupnorth. See the Transferring a Site to Another WordPress.com Account support page.

You have to be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard.
Clicking this link should display all blogs registered under the same username, including the hidden ones: https://dashboard.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=my-blogs&show=hidden
If you do not see the blog here http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-blogs/ then
follow this guide > http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-blogs/#my-blogs-dashboard-visibilityIf the log-in information is lost visit https://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword
If you are not successful, please complete the form for account recovery at this link https://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=recovery and submit it to the Account Recovery Staff so they can contact you by email ie. not on these public support forums which are available to everyone with internet access.

Thanks, timethief.
@ nancyadamsbiz,
I confused the issue and provided the wrong information. The username nancyupnorth doesn’t exist, as timethief demonstrated, so you can’t transfer anything to an account with that username (I thought you’d indicated you presently have an account with that username.). Not yet anyway. Please clarify for me the following:1. You have an old website, https://nancyupnorth.wordpress.com/. Are you able to log into it?
2. What is the username of the account that website is in?
3. Was the username of that account previously nancyupnorth?Since the username nancyupnorth doesn’t presently exist, there are two possibilities:
a. It was used before by you or someone else and can not be used again, according to WordPress.com policy.
b. It hasn’t been used yet. -
Thanks to both of you. Sorry if I was unclear to begin with, but I appreciate your excellent instructions. In the process of following them I found the login info connected with the username, and I now have access. Yay!
