Recover access to website?

We are a small nonproft and paid a local website design company to create a new website for us a few years ago. Recently we asked a local university student run company to update our site. They moved it without telling us and now we do not have access to our WordPress website and the media library with all of our files. Is there a way for us to access the backend of the website or at least the media library so that we can get the files? This student group doesn’t know how to. The original web design company has been no help even though they are the ones who created the WordPress website and set up all of the log in information. Now we don’t have any access to anything WordPress. We have the user name and password to the WordPress website but those don’t work any more. We have invoices where we paid the third party for the website through September 2021 and can provide those to you as proof of ownership. We don’t have a transaction id, an activation code or url, or a 2 factor authentication code because the third party set it up and now refuses to provide any of that information to us even though we are paying them through September. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • Hi there,

I do not see any sites under your @bglandmark WordPress.com account when I check on our end. You can confirm by visiting this page: https://wordpress.com/sites.

Is it possible you created your site under a different login?  Is it the case that you are using another provider like GoDaddy, Bluehost, Hostgator, etc. instead? What is the URL of the site you are needing help with?

Happy to check in our system so we can take a closer look.

This was set up by someone else who is no longer with our organization so am not sure of all the set up. I just created the WordPress.com account to try to find out how to get the website and files back. The website was bglandmark.org and we only signed in at http://www.bglandmark.org/wplogin . We’ve got the invoices where we paid the third party to develop and maintain the website. The developer who created the WordPress website refuses to provide any help and the student group that created the site that is live now doesn’t seem to know much about WordPress. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We have the user name and password for the wplogin but they don’t work. Please let us know if you need any other info. Thanks!

  • Hi,

It looks like your site is using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but is hosted with another webhost.

We’re only able to provide support for WordPress websites that are hosted by us here at WordPress.com. For help with a WordPress site hosted elsewhere you’ll need to ask over at the WordPress.org forums:

    https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Depending on the level of support that is included with your hosting plan, your webhost’s support team may also be able to assist.

If you want to know more about the differences between WordPress.com and the open-source WordPress software you can read this article:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

How do we find out the webhost? Neither of the website developers who we hired to create the website will help us at all with WordPress. We are trying to back track and figure out what to do on our own. Thanks!

  • It seems to be myhosting.com, but really it’s going to be whoever you’re paying from month to month or year to year to keep the site alive.

Once you have sorted out who they are and recovered access to that account may be able to help you make backups and use one of these recovery options for WordPress:
    https://wordpress.org/support/article/resetting-your-password/

As long as you can log into your hosting account, you should be able to regain access. If you need more help, head to to the forums for self-hosted sites at https://wordpress.org/support
