Recover domain after it has entered redemption period

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I am in need to recover a domain name in order to transfer it to another registrar. WHOIS lookup tells me that the domain is registered by Wild West (I believe this is wordpress.com’s registrar) and has entered into redemption period. How could I proceed to recover it ? The domain is psyinsight.com.

    Thank you in advance.

    Kindly,

  • Hi there,

It looks like you cancelled that domain on 19 January. Cancelling a domain means you give up ownership of the domain.

After cancellation the domain goes through a short grace period of a few days where we can still get it back. This is followed by a redemption period of around 40 days before it is deleted and released for anyone to buy again.

We can usually still recover a domain during Redemption, but our registrar charges a $80 fee to restore a domain during this phase. Please let me know if you agree to that fee, and I can get the recovery process started for you.

    Hi there,

First of all, thank you very much for your quick answer.

I was not taking care of this issue until a few days ago, and I was not aware that the domain had been cancelled. Have you registered any transfer request before that date ? (I believe that’s what should have been done, but human error is an option…).

Anyway, if that’s our only available option, I would appreciate it if you would initiate the domain recovery process.

    Thanks again !

  • The domain logs show you requested the transfer code on 19 January, but then cancelled the domain immediately after that, meaning even had you given the code to the new domain registrar they would have been unable to complete the transfer. A domain must be active in order to transfer it.

I’ve sent you a payment link for the redemption fee via email. Once we receive payment I can email our registrar to restore the domain. They usually reply within two days, so your domain should be back in your account by Tuesday. Then I can help you transfer it.

    Hi,

Thank you very much for further detail, and once again for your reactivity.

We have completed the payment through the link we received via email. We’re looking forward to hearing from you about the recovery.

    Have a nice week.

  • We’ve received the payment, thank you. I’ve emailed our registrar to ask them to restore the domain. I’ll let you know as soon as I hear back from them.

  • Your domain has been restored and is back in your account. However, our registrar appears to have locked the domain for transfer until June. I have emailed them to ask if this lock can be removed so you can transfer it. I’ll let you know what they say.

    Hi,

Thank you very much ! Everything has come back to normal, especially the MX records, that were quite important to us !

We would like to be able to either change the A record on our DNS to point it toward our new server, or to be able to transfer it to our provider so that we can handle our DNS on our own. I’ll be available to respond quickly, regardless of the available options.

Thank you again for your reactivity.

    Kindly,

  • You can change the A-record from MY Site ->Domains. Detailed instructions here:

Move a Domain Using Custom A Records

If you can provide the IP address to me I’m also happy to add that for you.

You can also change the domain’s name servers to move the DNS to your server entirely, even while the domain stays registered here:

    Change Name Servers

Either way, your domain will show your self-hosted site already, even while it’s not transferred away from us yet.

  • Thank you for your patience! The lock has been lifted, so you can proceed with the regular transfer domain steps we have here to get your domain transferred out:

Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar

Please let us know if you run into any trouble!

    Hi,

@kokkieh : Thank you, we have changed the A record (I had not noticed that it was possible to add a new A record that would override the default one provided by wordpress.com). My bad. Everything is working perfectly now.

    @vparkhere : Thank you !

Once again, thank you very much for your kindness, your reactivity and your professionalism. We should be able to manage the transfer on our own from now on. We’ll let you know if we run into trouble, but we should be fine.

    Have a nice day !

  • Glad we could help :)
