Recover username only (I don’t care about my old site content)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
I need to re-use a username I once blogged with, but deleted the site after I changed to different subject matter. Unfortunately, it was too long ago for me to find any identifying records to recover the site, although I can possibly provide other information (email addresses, content samples, etc.)

I have recently acquired the .com domain name that corresponds with that username. Is it possible to have the username released so I can make use of it again?

I have no interest in my old website content, just the username so I can connect it with JetPack and my new domain name.

Thanks so much for your help!

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Unknown

    Hi there!

While a username can’t be reused, if you have access to the email address you used on that account, and the account itself wasn’t closed (which is different from deleting a site), you can restore access to your account in one of two ways.

    1. Use the email address you used on the other WordPress.com account to reset your password. Please go to https://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword and enter the email address there. A password reset link will be emailed to you that you can click to change the password of your account. Afterwards, you can use the new password to log into your WordPress.com account.
    2. Reach out to us using the account recovery form. We’ll get back to you via email once you’ve submitted the account recovery-related information to us.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi,

I’ve tried my old emails, but none seem to work. When I try to login using the old username, it says the Account was deleted, not just the site.

So even if the account no longer exists, the username is forever unavailable?

That seems like a waste, and a high price to pay for the mistake of deleting an account I should have held onto. If the account was deleted, why continue reserving the username for eternity?

Especially when I have the .com domain to make use of it.

    Hi there!

Can you share the username that you’re trying to log in to?

If you don’t want to share the information publicly, note that you can always reach out to us via the account recovery form. We’ll reply to you via email once you’ve submitted the relevant information there.

    Hi,

I have tried before, but the three mandatory checkboxes on that form won’t allow me to submit it without entering something useless into one of them.

    Which I just did. =P

I referenced this forum conversation and your link on the form, if that helps.
