recovering a draft that has disappeared

  • Unknown's avatar

I just wrote a post draft. I was trying to use Zemanta to insert a picture when suddenly the text of my post was gone and only the picture HTML remained. I can only guess that I somehow highlighted the text of my draft and it was replaced when I clicked on the Zemanta image. When the post disappeared I hadn’t manually saved a draft yet. I know that often previous versions of a post appear in the white space at the bottom of the page, especially when you are making multiple revisions, but I didn’t see them. I exited the page and went to my dashboard, where I have a draft of the post that contains only the picture HTML. Is my post draft irreversibly gone?

The blog in question is bilinguish.wordpress.com .

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

In your Dashboard view, on the upper right corner, under the “[name]” is a tab labeled “Screen Options.” Click it. Here is a list of the screens where the modules can be hidden:
Posts – Post Tags, Categories, Excerpt, Send Trackbacks, Discussion, Comments, Post Slug, Post Author, Post Revisions
Page – Page Attributes, Recommendations, Featured Image, Discussion, Comments, Slug, Author, Revisions
    Select those.

You can look the last autosave for Posts » Post Revisions
You can look in the last autosave for Pages » Page Revisions

If you don’t find the post or page then it could be in your Trash. Provided you did not permanently delete it then restoration is possible.

    Hi.
-first click on “Screen options” at the top of the post editor page. after a drop down opens make sure “Revisions” is checked.

    – put your editor in the HTML mode.

    – If you saved your work previously, there should be a module for “revisions”.
you note the revisions are listed by date saved, click on the latest one.

    – revisions are saved in HTML format. copy and paste it into your post editor window.

    Good day to you, Timethief.

Thanks for your suggestions, timethief and dlager. “Post revisions” is not an option under screen options for the post in question. Since it is an option for other posts, I take it to mean that the post in question has no revisions, that there were no autosaved versions before the post disappeared. There is nothing in my trash either. So I assume that means that it was not autosaved anywhere and is therefore not recoverable. Would you agree?

    I would unfortunately agree.

We are getting an increasing number of reports of this kind of issue. For now, I suggest using an offline blog editor like Blogdesk or Ecto or Windows Live Writer. They keep all the information no matter what, so you can always repost it. And when support re-opens, make a report to them.

    @bilinguish
I’m so sorry this happened to you. raincoaster provided good avice. Useing an offline blog editor means you have a backup on your own computer of every post and page you create and publish to your blog from it.
