recovering an account with very limited info
-
Hello all,
I am the new volunteer webmaster for a non-profit club. Our webmaster passed away unexpectedly and we are trying to recover our wordpress.com website. I have seen the form to recover a site from a deceased admin but we only have limited pieces of info such as the name of the admin, another person’s user account (actually the one I am posting under right now), the domain name of the site (which we have since lost). With this limited info will it be possible to recover the site? And if so how would I go about trying to get this done? (If it helps I believe this was a paid site because it didn’t have ads and we can pay any past due balance on it.)
thanks,

hi,
Can you tell us your site url ?
Here is the support document on how to make the best use of this forum:

Hi there,
The only ways we can turn an account over to you is if you can provide all the information outlined in our deceased user process, or otherwise if you can verify ownership of the account via our account recovery form:
If you aren’t able to provide the required information in either case, we will not be able to give you access. We see the site owner as the individual account holder who created a site, not any organisation on whose behalf they may have made it, and we cannot make exceptions in this regard.

Thanks for the feedback. The domain name on the site *was* hmgspsw.com until a few months ago. It has since been taken over by a “squatter” since we didn’t renew it on time. Unfortunately I don’t know what the underlying wordpress site was. (But the user account I am logged in as now came in an email from wordpress.com which is why I think this was a wordpress.com rather than .org site. This user had non-admin rights to the account.) If it’s possible to figure out the wordpress site name/id/url from the old domain name I think we can use the deceased-user form to change the owner. I can also provide the name and email of the previous admin.

@harmonward This site doesn’t seem to have been on our servers:
https://securitytrails.com/domain/hmgspsw.com/history/aNormally if it were ever hosted here, you’d see our name servers somewhere in the history, but I don’t:
ns1.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns3.wordpress.comThe domain wasn’t registered here with us either, sorry! Even if it were, if someone else bought it already, there’s not much to be done.
But you might try getting in touch with the last host, if you can find that information, to see if there are backups. And if all else fails, maybe you can recover some information here and set up a new site.
https://web.archive.org/web/*/hmgspsw.comHoping that helps.

Oh, also, if it helps, WordPress.com (our service) and WordPress.org (the free software you can install anywhere) are not the same thing. My guess is that you were using WordPress.org at your old host. Good luck!

The websites you linked to were very helpful supernovia. Seeing the screenscrape from our site shows that it is indeed using wordpress.org software rather than .com. Also it looks like it was hosted at somewhere called bluehost. So thanks all for your help. Maybe we will move over here to wordpress.com when this is over!
