Recovering content after domain expiration

  • Unknown's avatar

Greetings – I had two blog sites here, and one had its domain expire (my negligence). Is there a way I can recover the content and re-establish under a new domain name? Thanks for any help.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Oh – the old site was at dailydante.com.

  • Hi,

There are a couple issues at play here. But first, let me assure you that your content still exists. A custom domain expiring does not cause your WordPress.com site to be deleted, it just causes your WordPress.com site to need to revert to its _______.wordpress.com URL. In this case, that URL would be dantedaily.wordpress.com

    Issue #1

The WordPress.com user account you are posting from is not the owner or admin of the site you are trying to access. This typically happens when you’ve ended up with a second WordPress.com user account and that second account is the one that owns the site. You’ll need to log into THAT user account in order to make any changes.

If you do not have access to that second account, let us know and we can try and help you out.

    Issue #2

On the WordPress.com side of things, dantedaily.wordpress.com has a Domain Connection upgrade that allows you to use a custom domain. However, the WordPress.com system doesn’t know that the domain itself expired. So any time someone goes to dantedaily.wordpress.com, the system says “oh, that site uses dailydante.com” and tries to forward people to that URL. Which of course causes the error where the site cannot be reached.

To fix this, you need to access the site’s dashboard at dantedaily.wordpress.com/wp-admin and then follow these instructions to change the primary domain back to dantedaily.wordpress.com.

I know I threw a lot at you there. So let me know if any of it doesn’t make sense or if you have any questions.
