Recovering my murdered friend's blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

My friend Yameen Rasheed was a human rights activist and blogger from the Maldives. He owned the site ‘The Daily Panic’ http://www.thedailypanic.com

He was murdered on 23 April 2017, as a reprisal to his writings on government corruption and religious extremism. This blog Yameen’s legacy. All of us who care about him are now worried that the blog is down.

This is the message that appears when we got to the site: ‘The website you were trying to reach is temporarily unavailable. Please check back soon. If you are the owner of this website, please contact Technical Support as soon as possible.’

I suspect this is because the licence has expired. We need help to recover his blog urgently, and make it online again.

    Please help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi @hawwalubna,
Your friend has a WordPress, but they weren’t hosted by WordPress.com

It looks like your friend used Bluehost
    https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=www.thedailypanic.com

You can contact Bluehosts support team here:
    https://my.bluehost.com/hosting/help

The most recent snapshot in the wayback machine says the site was active July 3rd. Hopefully that’s within their grace period.

    Good luck!

    Hi @lastfarthing

Thank you for the quick reply and pointing me to the right direction..

Just a follow up question… we don’t have access to his WordPress account either… though it was linked to a Facebook page (with same name) and we have admin rights to that.

Is there a way for us to get access to his WordPress account through submitting proof of death or something.. this way we can ensure the original WordPress stays intact.

No problem. I’m sorry about your friend.

His WordPress is probably a self-hosted version of WordPress.org. Bluehost offers it as a 1 click install with their hosting package.

Their support should be able to help you access everything he installed there, but I don’t know their specific policies.

    Hi @hawwalubna,

Were you also trying to access his WordPress.COM account? If so, you can email notify WordPress.com about it and discuss the next steps.

To notify WordPress.com about a deceased user, please email passwordhelp @ wordpress.com and include the user name or e-mail address for the account (if known), the URL/site address, a brief explanation of the situation, and the desired action for the site (making it private or transferring it to another owner) in your message.

For more information, please see this support documentation: https://en.support.wordpress.com/deceased-user/

I hope that helps, and I’m sorry about your friend. Please do let us know if you need further help.
