Recovering Social Media Shares after upgrading to a custom domain
-
Can you recover the social media share numbers from a free wordpress.com blog after you upgrade to a paid custom domain name? I recently upgraded and noticed that all the numbers showing how many times my posts were shared on Facebook, Twitter, etc. were gone. I simply went from areyoufinishedyet.wordpress.com to areyoufinishedyet.com
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey there,
The number of social media shares you see on your site come directly from Facebook, Twitter, etc. Those services look at the specific permalink for each post (or page) to determine how many shares/likes it has.
When your domain changed, the permalinks were changed. In turn, those social media services are looking for the shares/likes associated with the new permalinks.
There’s currently no way for us to change those numbers to show the shares associated with the old permalinks on your areyoufinishedyet.wordpress.com domain. We’d like to add this feature, but there’s no timeline as of yet.
It’s good that you made the change sooner rather than later, though! Now that you have areyoufinishedyet.com, new social media shares will be associated with that domain. No matter where you use the custom domain – here on WordPress.com, a self-hosted WordPress site, or anywhere else – those social media shares will stick with you as long as the permalinks stay the same. :)

Ah, that makes sense. Bummer. But thanks so much for your response! I’m guessing in the long run, the custom domain will do more for my blog than my past social media shares :)

Absolutely! Great move on your part. :) Let us know if you run into any other troubles.
Cheers!
