recovery of website?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
I created a website about 5 years ago. It was up for about a year and then I didn’t renew it because I had baby and didn’t have the time to keep up with the maintenance of it. I just logged into again for the 1st time and I can’t get to my site. Is there a way to get back my old website back? I really don’t want to have to redo the whole thing! My website was alisonwakefielddesign.com. Thank you in advance.

We can’t help as your site wasn’t running on the wordpress.com platform but was hosted by Bluehost.

Hosting providers usually keep a backup of a deleted site for a short time but certainly not fir 5 years. So you”ll have to start all over again.

    Hi Alison,

I understand your frustration. It’s always a pain to lose a website, especially when you’ve put a lot of work into it.

There are a few things you can try to get your old website back.

    1. Check your domain name registration. Make sure that the domain name is still registered in your name. If it’s not, you’ll need to contact the current owner and see if they’re willing to sell it to you.
    2. Check your web hosting account. If you had a web hosting account, you may still have access to the files that make up your website. If you do, you can try to restore your website from those files.
    3. Use the Wayback Machine. The Wayback Machine is a website that archives old websites. If your website was archived by the Wayback Machine, you may be able to access it there.
  • Hi @alliesallie7 – Using Wayback Machine as @a02aurelia kindly mentions, I see what looks like a sort of one-page resume site, but I am getting text only. The images aren’t appearing unfortunately.

I’ve got an idea. Consider the following:

    1. Purchase a Personal plan here and use the free custom domain credit that comes with it to once again become the owner of the domain alisonwakefielddesign.com, which is available!
    2. Copy the text you see on the the Wayback Machine view and paste it into a website you begin creating here to pick up where you left off 5 years ago.

Let us know if you have any questions about this as you move forward. It’s great to have you back!
