Rectangular photo in Inuit Types
-
On the first day I used Inuit Types, when I set a thumbnail a rectangular version of the same photo automatically appeared in the actual post. I actually liked this feature, but it disappeared the next day-when I set a thumbnail, no photo appeared in the text. I had to insert a photo in the post again individually using the media box. I’m at http:www.alwayswellwithin.com
I noticed this feature is still occurring on this blog which uses Inuit Types-
He says he just uses the thumbnail feature and this is what happens, but he also says you have to set thumbnails in the theme options. But I don’t see an option for this in the theme options.
Any ideas how to enable this feature again? Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This is how it’s done according to Mr. W at http://randomoid.com
– Go to the Dashboard page (blogname.wordpress.com/wp-admin/)
– On your left menu, go to: Appearance -> Theme Settings
– There you tick: Single Post Featured Imageplus set thumbnail, I beleive
Now it should be displayed on top of your post too.

And that thumbnail image is supposed to link to the original size image, at least according to the original theme author’s demo. I take this with a large grain of salt because the theme apparently has been recoded to work with our multiuser platform here on WordPress.com. Unfortunately, for me, this has led to having two images in my photoblog’s posts: one being the set thumbnail image and the second the “original”.

@justjennifer
Me too. In fact I will no longer be using this “set thumbnail” feature at all and this is why.
1. I already presize and upload and insert only thumbnail size images in my posts. Hence the full size of my images in my posts is always the thumbnail size.
2. The layout I chose is: One Column Featured Posts
3. Featured Post Entries are set to two.On my front page in the “featured Posts” boxes when I click “set thumbnail” what I get is the result of the thumbnail sized image in the post being blown up into a huge, ugly and distorted image. This occurs whether or not I actually leave the thumbnail size image, which in my case is the full size image, in the post or remove it. Consequently, this feature is useless in my case.
In addition I have noticed another anatomy. All of the following posts have thumbnail sized images inserted into them, and I have not “set thumbnail” in any of them. None of them is a featured post but all posts are appearing on my front page.

http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/04/08/social-bookmarks-for-wordpress-com-blogs/Note that only two of those three posts ^ have visible thumbnail images on the front page. “Protect Your Intellectual Property: Develop a Strong Brand” does not have a thumbnail displaying on the front page.
IMHO this “feature” needs some Staff attention.

This is what I’ve observed…
Excerpts for all posts show up on the front page, whether thumbnails are used or not unless you use the ‘featured posts’ option in the Theme options (under appearance), then some will just show up as featured posts (larger image with black box around it and date in upper right corner – I think this may be what TT refers to as the ugly, distorted image(s) and the others as excerpts. If you set the number of featured posts to match the number of posts per page in the reading section under ‘settings’ then I think they will all be featured posts and not excerpts. If the numbers don’t match, they will be a mix.
You can use the thumbnail for front page AND insert a thumbnail image on the post page and get them in both places as long as you don’t use any ‘featured posts’ (set to 0), which makes the black box with distorted image on landing page and don’t check Single Post Feature Image or you will automatically get a linked rectangle image on second page. Or you can use a thumbnail on front page AND any of the other 2 WP standard size images from the regular media box. TT, maybe you don’t want to use thumbnails on the front page too (in addition to the post page), but I believe this is how you would do it.
When I tick on the Single Post Featured Image after clicking Theme Settings and use a thumbnail, I get a rectangular shaped image automatically in the post. This meant that I too had double images in my posts and had to go back and delete the image I inserted. I don’t think this is a changeable feature one post at a time. Once it’s set, every time you use a thumbnail for the front page, you will get the rectangular shaped imagine automatically in the post. I assume you don’t get any image if you don’t use a thumbnail and can then insert any image you want, but I haven’t tried this yet. That’s where the flexibility would come in.
When I went to the author’s demo, I saw that all the posts with thumbnails have the rectangular image in the post, because this Single Post Featured Image must be turned on –
http://bizzartic.com/bizzthemes/inuitypes/I find the name of this feature really confusing as it sounds like it applies to the featured posts on the front page and not to an image automatically appearing on the post page.
One of the features of the theme is auto-image resizing, but I don’t know if this works in the WordPress version or not. My rectangular shaped photos generally look good, but there’s one that doesn’t fit entirely perhaps due to the original shape.
Naturally, we will not get all the features on WordPress, but I find it helpful to look at the site to get a sense of what the theme might be able to do.
Hope this makes sense!
I like this theme a lot, but like with all themes you almost need a page or two checklist that actually explains how to use the options.

I see that the downside of using the “Single Post Featured Image” which makes the larger rectangular photo of the front page thumbnail appear on the post page means that if you change to another theme you will have no photos on your post pages. Because you’ve never actually inserted the photo and the link to the thumbnail which makes it appear on the post page doesn’t exist in other themes.
I tried this out to see. When I did the preview of Under the Influence theme, NO posts showed at all (!) and of course no photos either. When I did the preview of Neutra, the posts appeared normally, but they were without any photos as I suspected.
Because this theme has a unique magazine style landing page, I think this is an interesting point to consider – how this theme will transfer to a new theme.
I wish there was a way to use the rectangular photo option and have it appear when you transfer to a new theme. I like this look a lot because I find the medium size option on the media window is too small at the top of a page and the largest size is too big. I’ll have to really think through if it’s worth staying with the rectangle option and then end up with posts with the photos if I switch again (which is not unlikely since I’m changeable.)
I also see that the right and left margins/sidebar area are not the same width, there is more space on the right margin/sidebar area — so if you have the sidebar on the left, altogether it looks like there is more white space.
Still learning Inuit Types…

I’ve turned off the ‘Single Post Featured Image’ that places the rectangle shaped (2.39:1 aspect ratio, also known as anamorphic) image into the post page when you set a thumbnail for the landing page. You can still set a thumbnail, but won’t get this image in a post page, and can place an image via the media box instead.
I did this because none of those rectangle photos will appear in my posts if I choose to move to a different theme that does not have the ‘Single Post Featured Image.’ At the present time, Intuit Types theme is the only theme with this feature.
The WP staff says that more themes will be coming out with this feature in the future. Then you could easily move between the themes that support this feature without loosing the photos or so it appears.
Until that happens, for me for now the best option should I like to have the rectangle shaped photo appear at the top of my post is to re-size the photo to those dimensions (listed above) and insert the photo into the post using the media box. Then the photo should appear if I move to a theme that doesn’t support this ‘Single Post Featured Image’ option. I can still set a thumbnail to appear on the landing page.
