Recycle a "free" sitename?

    Greetings,

Using the “Free” option, I’ve created a site named “X.wordpress.com” and customized its template, but have not published it yet.

After thought, I want to create a site named “Y.wordpress.com” instead.

I understand that if I rename my work to “Y.wordpress.com”, the abandoned site, “X.wordpress.com”, is not available to another person to claim and reuse. If another wanted to use “X.wordpress.com”, they would be forced to accept a variation like “X1357924680.wordpress.com”.

Given that “X” is a rather common phrase that many would covet, is there anyway for me to tell WordPress management that they can reuse the site name, “X.wordpress.com”?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @purdue1947, there isn’t. But there are conditions in which a site address could eventually be released.

Or, you could rename to Y, have us restore X, and then leave a note on the X inviting folks to get in touch with you if they want the domain. Then you could transfer to a worthy cause as you like.

    This information is very helpful.

(There are ~0.5M residents in the Pulaski Counties of 7 states, so I was surprised that it was not already “taken”.)

Once I’ve renamed “X” to “Y”, how to request a restore of “X”?

Then, after the restoration of “X”, I would add the offer in a textbox with my UserName on the HomePage. Correct?

Then if someone opened “X.wordpress.com”, they would see my offer. If they wanted to get the site, how would we would proceed to effect the transfer of ownership?

The coaching has been very useful.

Now how to request a restore of “X”, now that I’ve renamed it (and actively using it as “Y”) so that I have the option of transferring ownership to “X”?

    pulaskicounty.wordpress.com is no longer available.
The authors have deleted this site.

Personally I wouldn’t have deleted anything. I would have just created an additional site. Anyway this thread has been tagged for further staff assistance.

    Greetings,

    Here’s the backstory:

I asked if there’s a way to “recycle” a website I want to “abandon”.

    supernova answered (in part):
“Or, you could rename to Y, have us restore X, and then leave a note on the X inviting folks to get in touch with you if they want the domain. Then you could transfer to a worthy cause as you like.”

I’ve since renamed the site “X” and want to know how to “have us restore X”.

If there a procedure I can request for “restore X” or did supernova misspeak?
(If restoration is not possible, I can deal with it, but there are ~0.5M potential users [residents of a Pulaski County in any of several states] of the website “X”, so it’d be a shame to take the name out of circulation.)

    Respectfully,
    Jim

  • Hi Jim, and hi @themagicrobot. The current rename process (rather unfortunately) deletes the old site address.

We can restore it though, so I’ve done just that.

    Have a great weekend, folks!
