Redacting text
-
Hi, is there any way of redacting text in an article? As in, the black block over certain parts of text?
-
Hi there,
In theory this is possible using some HTML code, but I just tested it, and it appears the HTML needed for this is not currently supported on WordPress.com. I’ve opened an enhancement request to have that added, but can’t tell you when that might happen.
Also keep in mind that this will only hide the text, not remove it, and anyone will still be able to see the full text by using the browser’s built-in developer tools.
If you want text to be actually, properly redacted so it cannot be read at all, the only way to do that is to not add it in the first place, but to add black squares using the symbol inserter or a font like Wingdings instead – to use that font, “type” a number of black squares in a word processor, then copy-paste into the editor – or to simply replace whatever text you’re redacting with the text,
[redacted]. When we need to redact something here in the forums we do the latter. -
Hi
Yeah, I’ve tried using shapes and wingdings but when I copy it into wordpress, it doesn’t work (either doesn’t paste or coverts back to the latin letters). I will probably have to go for the [redacted] thing but it won’t be as aesthetically pleasing; will keep my eye out for the enhancement!
Thanks for your help -
Are you able to copy and paste these?
██████I was able to put those in a post.
(Edited because I found a better blackout character)
