Redemption period
-
I have a domain that has been in redemption for over 2 weeks – how long are domains in redemption before being released back in to the wild?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
Redemption lasts around 45 days in most cases, but it’s not guaranteed that it will be released at the end of the period. During Redemption the registrar can try to sell the domain privately at auction, or if someone has the domain on back order at another registrar it will be registered for them the moment it’s released.
The safer option is to recover the domain from redemption. Our registrar charges a $80 fee to do this, though, so I’ll need you to agree to that fee if you want me to attempt a recovery.

Thank you for your reply!
The reason why I let the domain expire is because I purchased it originally with WordPress when my website was with WordPress but last year, I created a website with Wix and part of the deal was that I can buy a domain. At first, I linked up Wix to the domain at WordPress, but the fees to have a website at Wix and own a domain at WordPress just seemed silly so I thought I would let the domain expire so I could purchase it at Wix. But now I have to wait for 45 days to get my website back up and running at my preferred domain but have the chance that I lose the domain.
Is there any chance I can backorder the domain at Wix? Or is the only way I can use this domain by paying WordPress? In other words, what is the best way going about this?

You could actually have transferred the domain from us to Wix, then you would never have run the risk of losing it.
You’ll need to ask Wix if it’s possible to back-order the domain from them, as I really have no idea. But the risk of losing it will still exist.
Or, if we can recover the domain for you, I can help you transfer it to Wix once it’s back in your account.

I would love if you could recover it for me. I am happy to pay the $80 fee. How do I go about this? Thank you for your help!
-
I’ve just sent you a payment link via email. Once we receive payment I can email our registrar to restore the domain, and from there it usually takes a day or two for them to restore it. Should the recovery fail, your payment will be refunded in full.

I just wanted to let you know I’ve emailed our registrar. I’ll let you know as soon as I hear back from them, hopefully later today.

Your domain has been restored and is back on your account.
However, you will need to re-verify the contact information before your domain will work. I’ve sent you an email to do that. The email will come from a @secureserver.net address. Click the link in that email, and your domain should be reactivated immediately.

You can find instructions to transfer the domain registration here:
Transfer a Domain to Another Registrar
Shortly, click the Accept Settings button on the transfer screen. Check your email for the transfer code, and give that to Wix. The rest of the process should complete automatically in about a week after you’ve given the code to Wix.

Hi there,
I’d like to redeem outofofficefortravel.com and transfer to wix as you’re assisting the individual above.
Please let me know what additional information you require.
Thanks

Glad I could help. If you run into any difficulty with the transfer, please let me know.
Can you please start a new thread using this link:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1
In the tags area, add the word “modlook”, and we’ll reply to you there. That way we’ll be able to see all your account information along with your post.
When you create the thread, please confirm if you agree to the $80 redemption fee we need to pay our registrar to get the domain back.

So I got an email after I clicked ‘Confirmed Transfer’ in the email asking if I wanted to transfer to Wix. This is what the email said:
The transfer you requested has been declined because you opted-in to a transfer lock for 60 days when you agreed to the WordPress.com Change of Registrant policy.
For security reasons, when you change the registrant’s first name, last name, or organization name, you consent to a 60 day lock on transferring the domain name. Because you have provided your consent, Section 3(6) of the ICANN Policy on Transfer of Registration between Registrars permits us to decline your transfer request.
So do I just wait for 60 days to be up and try again?

If you made changes to the contact info after the domain was restored the domain is locked, yes. After 60 days you should be able to transfer it. Meanwhile, you can still use it with a Wix site by mapping it to them.
