redesign

My husband’s company just had their website designed by a web design company and it is awful. (It doesn’t flow well and contains inaccurate info about the business.) I am a graphic designer (primarily print) and am taking on the task of redesigning it. What info do I need to have to be able to create a temporary page to take the place of the current one? Can I work on a robust site while having my new temporary site live?

  • Hey there,

Nothing worse than a website that doesn’t fit the bill, and for what it’s worth, I’d do exactly the same thing as what you’re doing.

What info do I need to have to be able to create a temporary page to take the place of the current one?

So we have a built in Coming Soon facility, that can be active via Settings > General > scroll down to Privacy as seen here: https://wordpress.com/support/settings/privacy-settings/

The steps in their entirety as follows:

    1. Create a new site here at WordPress.com here: – you would not need to purchase a new domain, but just create a .WordPress.com domain (e.g. example.WordPress.com)
    2. You can then map the domain as per these steps: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/
    3. To set a new domain for the site, the site would need to have a paid plan.
    4. You’d then activate the coming soon page as above.

It’s possible to create a more bespoke coming soon page, with the use of a plugin, like those seen here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/coming%20soon/

In order to run plugins and installed themes, the business plan would need to be in use:

Can I work on a robust site while having my new temporary site live?

Yes – if you wish to keep the new site live, while you work on the new one, a new site can be created here at WordPress.com as per these steps:

    1. Create a new site here at WordPress.com here: – you would not need to purchase a new domain, but just create a .WordPress.com domain (e.g. example.WordPress.com)
    2. Build the site under the temporary domain
    3. Connect the domain as per these steps: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/

I am a graphic designer (primarily print) and am taking on the task of redesigning it.

Out of curiosity, what are you using to design the site? The reason why I ask is because, depending on the design, a custom WordPress theme would need to be built. It may be worth keeping in mind, that there could be a theme out there that you can utilise, saving time, and would also be future proofing against any possible issues in the future, as theme developers often support their work.

On that note – what is the new site going to be about and what are you looking for visitors to site to do when they get there? (i.e. reach out via a contact form, or make a purchase from an online store…) We can guide on you what you may require. :)

Lastly, I thought I’d mention as you mentioned you’ve not had much luck with a developer – we offer a Built By WordPress.com, where we can build the site for you. More on this service can be found here: https://wordpress.com/built-by-wordpress-com/

I hope this is all useful information and looking forward to helping out!
