Redesigning Site for Client and Need Help With Logistics

  • Unknown's avatar

My client wanted their website redesigned. Their domain was registered with Network Solutions, and their web host is: http://www.elosoft.com/info.asp. They recently renewed both of these in July.

I believe I’d be able to transfer their current domain to WordPress if I created a new site for them here, but what would happen if their site already has a host (Elosoft)?

Just a note that they want to completely replace their current site, so I’d be working completely from scratch. They only asked that we keep the domain as that’s what their community knows them by.

In case anyone suggests I download WordPress.org because my client already has a host, if you check their hosts’ website there’s nowhere I could possibly install WordPress.org. They also haven’t been responsive to my emails on the subject.

Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi there!

You can get your site set up here before switching your domain over!

When you sign up for a new site, we give you a free subdomain (*.wordpress.com) that you can use to start building your new site.

Here’s a guide that will help you migrate your site to WordPress.com:

    https://transferto.wordpress.com/

Note that you will need a paid plan when you want to connect your domain to the site or if you need functionality above and beyond what the free plan offers. You can compare the different plan levels here:

    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

If you do need to upgrade to a paid plan, just skip the domain option when you sign up to keep building your site using the staging domain.

I hope that helps! Let us know if you have any questions.

    Hi!

Thank you so much for your reply, it definitely helps.

Do you know what would happen with their current host after I connect their domain to the WordPress site (because I know WordPress includes hosting)?

Sorry, I’ve never done this before.

  • Once the domain is moved to our hosting the previous hosting can be cancelled. But it’s best to wait a few days until everything is set up and working well, just in case. The changes on the back end that move the domain to a different hosting provider can take up to 3 days to fully populate around the world.

But y’all are on the right path.
    1. set up the new site with the free address.
    2. change the domain name servers or dns records to point to WordPress.com hosting.
    3. make sure everything is working.
    4. cancel the old hosting plan.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the help!

I finally connected the domain and launched the site. Our domain is connected but when I look it up, it’s still pointing to our old website. I read that it can take up to 72 hours to fully update across global servers.

Is the new site supposed to populate right when the domain’s been connected, or is it still going to take some time to fully update?

I just want to know if I need to be addressing an issue now, because the website needs to be launched by Saturday.

  • I read that it can take up to 72 hours to fully update across global servers.

    That’s correct.

I re read this thread and I don’t see the URL mentioned, just the previous hosting provider. If you don’t mind sharing we can make sure things are set up correctly.
