Redirect?
-
I am not leaving WordPress. I just need for people to see temporarily – instead of the site – a certain message when the click on the link.
I have been told to just put a new static front page up, but then I would have to delete all my sidebar stuff and everything else – a lot of work which I do not want to lose.

You can set your blog to Private from Settings->Privacy and then only Users of the blog will be able to view it.
-
I’ve done that, but then there is no way to leave a message on there as to why it’s unaddressable….
That’s what I really need. -

@danwalter: Removing your widgets is pretty little work and you don’t really loose anything. E.g. if you remove the Page widget, your pages won’t be visible/accessible anymore, but they’re not gone: when you reinstall the widget, your list of pages will be there again. You only loose the content of text widgets if you remove them, but it’s no big deal copying that content and pasting it somewhere.
Does your sidebar itself contain something you wish to hide? If not, you can simply add a static front page and set all other pages and posts to private.

Firstly, I didn’t realize that individual pages could be set to private, so that will help.
But you’re saying that if I remove the widgets on the sidebar, that when I restore them, the list of links will still be there?

… and yest there are things in the sidebar that need to be hidden. They are links to the pages (chapters) that make up the rest of the blog, so it wouldn’t make sense to have a different static front page, but still have links to all the rest of the pages on the sidebar.
-
Yes, the list of links will be there, because it’s part of your blog, not of the widget (and, yes, I tested it – I never suggest anything before I test it myself). The only way for your links to disappear is if you go to Manage > Links and remove the links themselves. If you remove your Links widget and then reinstall it, it will recognize the existing list of links again. If you tested this and got a different result, my guess is you either forgot to Save Changes or revisited a previously cashed version of your blog instead of the renewed one.
(Or there’s some confusion: I mean the links to other sites – your blogroll. The links to your chapters are a different story, since you have them in a text widget. As I said before, if you remove the text widget, these links are gone, of course.)

OK. So I’ll just have a new static front page and make all the pages private. That should work. (Unless there’s a way to redirect the site. I just upgraded and bought the domain if that makes a difference.)
